Got a call around 9 PM from a guy at the Esplanade Shopping Center in Oxnard. He had just finished dinner at one of the spots over there during a break from his overnight security shift. Walked back to his 2017 Jeep Wrangler, turned the key, and nothing. No crank, no dash lights, dead response. His shift picked back up in about an hour.
Dealer was closed. A tow would just park it somewhere until morning and that did not help him tonight.
I got to the lot and connected to the OBD port. Pulled data from the WIN module and saw the issue right away. His vehicle battery had dropped low enough during dinner that the module lost its key pairing. The OHT692713AA remote head key was physically fine, battery inside was fine, but the Wrangler's brain had forgotten it existed. Voltage dip wiped the learned key data.
Stabilized the vehicle battery first. Then reprogrammed his key back into the WIN module through OBD. All four buttons tested good, transponder recognized, engine fired on the first turn.
He made it to his post that night. The whole thing took less time than the tow truck's ETA would have been. The problem was never his key. It was a weak battery that caused the module to dump its memory. That kind of diagnosis is why I carry more than just a key machine.
