He called around 9pm from a diner parking lot in Mar Vista, Oxnard. Night security shift. Dinner break. Went back to his Wrangler and it would not start.
The key turned. Engine did not crank. No obvious warning lights pointing at anything useful. He had about an hour before he needed to be back at his post, the dealer was closed, and a tow was just going to leave the Jeep sitting somewhere until morning.

That kind of low-voltage event can cause the body control module to drop its pairing to the remote head key. The key is physically fine, the ignition cylinder is fine, but the module no longer recognizes the key and will not allow the engine to start.
I stabilized the battery, connected my programming tool through the OBD port, and re-enrolled his existing key. The whole process took less than half an hour. He turned the key, it cranked immediately, and he made his shift.
He asked what it would have cost at the dealer. I told him they would not have seen him until the next morning anyway, and the tow alone would have eaten into whatever they charged. He just nodded and drove off.
The fob was fine the whole time. The diagnosis was the job.
