It's a fair question and a real problem in this industry, especially on newer vehicles where the programming side can get complicated. The pattern with scam operations is a low number on the phone that changes once they see the car or realize it needs more than a key cut. Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Yes. After programming, the replacement fob is tested on every function before I hand it over: passive door-handle unlock at walking distance, all four buttons, push-button start, and the emergency insert blade in the lock cylinder. Partial failures are a real thing on these, where, say, the buttons work but passive proximity detection doesn't register. That kind of split failure is easy to miss if you're only testing one thing and calling it done.

Q: My Wrangler fob still locks and unlocks the doors but the push-button start stopped recognizing it. What's going on?

This one comes up a lot on the JL-generation. The remote functions and the proximity start function use different communication pathways, so they can fail independently.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2023 Wrangler?

Possibly, but there are a few things to check first. The fob needs to match the factory FCC ID on your original, and the dealer part number has to be correct for your specific Wrangler configuration. Bring-your-own fobs that look right on the outside sometimes aren't a match when you get into the programming side. If the part numbers line up, I can typically program it.

A guy pulled off onto the shoulder of the 101 outside Oxnard, somewhere between the harbor exits, and called me. His 2023 Jeep Wrangler had gone dark on him mid-trip. Fob wasn't responding, push-button start wasn't registering, and he had a client meeting in two hours that he was already mentally writing off.

It was a weekday evening. The dealer was closed.

When I got to him, I went through the basics first, held the fob directly to the start button to see if the car would read it passively through the button's built-in antenna. Nothing. Popped the fob open. The CR2450 wasn't just low, it had zero voltage on the meter. A completely dead cell.

Fresh CR2450, fob back together, held it to the button. Started right up.
