In Nyeland Acres, a woman who worked nights at an urgent care clinic in Oxnard called me a little after midnight on a Monday. She had walked out to the employee lot after her shift and her 2015 Wrangler would not respond. Fob was dead, not the battery, the fob itself. The key still turned the ignition because it has to, but the remote functions were gone and she needed a replacement before the next shift.
Dealer was closed. Their first available appointment was Friday. She was not waiting four days.
I was in the lot inside of an hour. The 2015 Wrangler remote head key uses the key blade in the ignition, so there is a cutting component and a programming component to the job. I cut a replacement blade to her vehicle and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port using my diagnostic equipment. Her fob is a four-button unit with a CR2032 inside, and I tested each button before I closed anything up.
While she sat in the passenger seat I walked her through what to do if the fob ever stops responding again: get the battery swapped first, and know that the key blade still gets you in and starts the car regardless. That backup matters when you are leaving a night shift at midnight.
She was driving home before 1am. The dealer would have been a longer wait and a much larger bill whenever that Friday slot finally came around.
