2004 Jeep Wrangler Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy near Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Moorpark. His 2004 Jeep Wrangler was sitting in a lot and just would not start. Key turns, dash lights up, fuel pump primes, then nothing. The Sentry Key (SKIM) light on the instrument cluster was staying solid instead of going out after the bulb check.
He had been using the same original key for twenty years. The plastic head was cracked right along the seam where the transponder chip sits. My guess before I even got there: the chip shifted or lost contact with the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder.
I drove out, plugged my IM608 into the OBDII port, and pulled the SKIM module. Sure enough, it was throwing a stored fault for "invalid key" on the last few start attempts. The transponder was intermittent. Some days it read, some days it did not. Classic on a cracked housing with a loose chip.
Cut a new Y160-PT blank to his existing key code, programmed the new transponder through the PCM, and tested it through five cold start cycles. SKIM light came on with the bulb check, then off within two seconds. Every time.
Handed him the old key back too. Still works as a door and ignition key mechanically, just can not talk to the immobilizer anymore. He tossed it in the glovebox as a backup for the door lock. The whole job took about 35 minutes in the parking lot.
