How Jeep Liberty Keys Changed Over the Years
KJ, 1st Generation
This is where security got serious for the Liberty. Jeep introduced the SKIM immobilizer system with a transponder chip embedded in the key head. Your key turns the ignition like normal, but if that chip does not talk to the SKIM module, the engine will not crank. All programming goes through the OBD-II port, no shortcuts.
KK, 2nd Gen Early
Jeep kept the SKIM immobilizer but added remote head keys with built-in lock, unlock, and panic buttons. The transponder chip still communicates with the immobilizer for engine start, and the remote runs on a CR2032 battery. Programming still requires OBD-II access, and self-programming is not an option on these.
KK, 2nd Gen Late
This is where things got more advanced. Select trims introduced push-button start with smart keys and flip keys, plus rolling codes for added security. The SKIM system stayed, but programming now requires specialized diagnostic tools. Some of these need dealer-level equipment, and we will tell you upfront if yours is one of them.
Which Key Does Your Liberty Use?
A traditional metal key with a transponder chip hidden inside the plastic head. It looks like a regular key, but without that chip programmed, your Liberty will not start.
Your key and remote are combined into one unit. Lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built right into the key head. Runs on a CR2032 battery.
A more compact key with a folding blade and push-button start capability on select trims. Uses a CR2032 battery and rolling codes for security.
How Much Does a Jeep Liberty Key Cost?
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location.
Us vs. the Dealer
Need more than one key? We program multiples on the same visit for less than the dealer charges for one.
Common Jeep Liberty Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
The transponder chip in the key head wears out, especially on 2002-2010 models. Key still turns, blade fits, but engine refuses to crank because SKIM is not getting a signal. We test signal first; if dead, we cut and program a new key on the spot.
Key Fob Battery Drain
We check battery voltage first on 2008-2012 fobs. A weak CR2032 causes intermittent lock/unlock fails, and once dead the rolling code sync breaks. Fresh battery fixes it. Lost sync? We reprogram through OBD-II in your Simi Valley driveway.
Immobilizer Bypass Needed for Remote Start
Aftermarket remote start on a 2002-2007 Liberty cranks but will not run. SKIM needs to see a transponder chip signal every start. Fix requires a 791 bypass module with an extra programmed key hidden inside the dash. We handle the whole setup.
Programming Tool Incompatibility
Not every locksmith can program every key. 2002-2007 transponder systems are picky and will not pair with generic tools lacking Chrysler software. We carry Autel IM608 and Smart Pro with full Chrysler subscriptions, so your KJ gets programmed first time.
Can You Program a Jeep Liberty Key Yourself?
No self-programming option exists for these years. The SKIM immobilizer requires OBD-II programming with professional diagnostic tools to sync the transponder chip with your ECU.
Same story here. The SKIM system requires a PIN code extraction and professional OBD-II equipment. No DIY procedure is available per Chrysler's requirements.
The smart key and push-button start system on these models requires specialized diagnostic tools to register the key with the body control module. This one is professional-only across the board.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 2002 Jeep Liberty was the first Jeep ever to come standard with Chrysler's SKIM immobilizer and transponder keys across the entire lineup. Before the KJ, most Jeeps relied on plain mechanical ignition with no electronic security at all. That single change cut theft rates dramatically while the Liberty kept its rugged off-road reputation fully intact.
