Got a call from a daycare worker up near Meditation Mount in Ojai. She was running late for her shift and her 2005 Jeep Liberty would not respond to anything. Key in the ignition, turn, nothing. The red Sentry Key light on the dash just sat there glowing.
She had already swapped the CR2032. Smart move, but this was not a battery problem.
I drove out and pulled the M3N5WY72XX apart on her hood. The remote head circuit board had a hairline crack near one of the solder pads. The remote buttons were intermittent and the 4D transponder signal was not reaching the Sentry Key module in the steering column. That module reads the chip at about a one-inch range, so even a slight board flex can kill the connection.
I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port under the dash, ran the Chrysler SKIS security access sequence, and programmed a fresh remote head key. Cut the Y160-PT blade on site, tested the transponder handshake, cycled the ignition twice to confirm the Sentry Key light went out within two seconds each time. Then checked all four buttons: lock, unlock, panic, and trunk.
She walked into the daycare about 15 minutes late instead of not at all. The dealer in Thousand Oaks quoted her two days and a tow. She got it done in her parking lot for a fraction of that.
