Out in the Meiners Oaks neighborhood, a guy who shapes surfboards for a living called me from his shop lot. His 2002 Jeep Liberty cranked but would not fire. Dash showed the Sentry Key warning light, solid on, which meant the SKIM module (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module, part number 56045699AD on these first-gen KJ Libertys) was rejecting the transponder signal.
He had already called the Jeep dealer. Earliest opening was Thursday, three days out, drop the vehicle off, wait for a callback. He builds boards on a schedule. Deliveries do not wait.
I got there around midday. Plugged the Smart Pro into the OBD-II port under the dash and ran the Sentry Key relearn. The security access timer on these KJ models takes about 15 minutes to cycle through, and during that window you just sit there while the tool talks to the SKIM and the PCM. His original Y160-PT transponder key was fine physically, the blade was clean and the 4D64 chip tested good. The stored pairing had just corrupted, which is a known pattern on high-mileage first-gen Libertys where the SKIM loses sync with the PCM.
Once the relearn finished, the engine fired on the first crank. He loaded a board into the back and drove off for a delivery. The whole thing, plug-in to engine start, was about 25 minutes. Most of that was waiting on the security timer. The dealer would have taken days and charged a good chunk more for the same result.
