Lincoln has run Ford's key technology throughout its history, which means every model is serviceable with Ford-compatible professional tools. The Town Car used standard keys until 1998, when Ford's PATS transponder system became standard across the Lincoln lineup. The Aviator debuted Lincoln's first smart proximity key in 2003. By 2013 Intelligent Access with push-button start was rolling out across the MKZ, MKX, and Navigator, and it is now standard on every current Lincoln model including the Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator, and Navigator.

What the Lincoln Dealer Experience Is Really Like
Getting a Lincoln key replaced at a dealer follows a predictable pattern. The service advisor confirms your VIN and ownership documentation, then orders the OEM fob through Ford's parts supply chain. For smart keys on 2011 and newer models, programming requires a PIN retrieved from the Ford server, which the dealer accesses through Ford IDS. The car must be physically present during the programming session because the immobilizer registers the new key via the OBD port with the vehicle powered on.
The Tow Bill and the Total Cost
For all-keys-lost situations this means the car has to be towed to the dealer facility, adding $150 to $300 on top of the key cost. Dealer pricing runs about $150 for a transponder key and $320 to $400 or more for a programmed smart key, with aftermarket sources estimating total dealer service costs run roughly four times the cost of the parts alone once labor and towing are factored in.

Lincoln has shipped the SecuriCode door keypad on its vehicles since 1980, which means it is the longest-running factory keyless entry system in the automotive industry. Every current Lincoln model including the Navigator, Aviator, Nautilus, and Corsair still comes with a SecuriCode keypad as standard. If your fob battery dies and you are locked out, the keypad gets you into the car without calling anyone.
Finding Your Factory Code
The five-digit factory code is on a wallet card in your original owner documentation. If you do not have the card, the code can be retrieved by a locksmith with Ford IDS access or by a Lincoln retailer.
Dead Fob Backup Start
Once you are inside, the backup start procedure for a dead fob is to place the fob in the center console slot designated for this purpose on most models, press the brake, and press the Start/Stop button. The car reads the passive RFID chip in the fob at close range without needing battery power. Knowing your SecuriCode and your center console backup start location together means a dead fob almost never has to result in a service call.

How to Open
Battery Type
Most 2013 and newer Lincoln Intelligent Access fobs use a CR2032. Some earlier models from the 2010 to 2014 era, particularly the MKC and MKZ, may use a CR2025, which is the same diameter but slightly thinner. The battery type is printed on the existing battery. Replacing the battery does not erase PATS programming. The fob retains its pairing and should work immediately after a swap. If it does not respond after a fresh battery, press the lock and unlock buttons several times in quick succession near the car to resync the rolling code. Slim-style fobs on 2015 and newer models have tighter plastic clips that crack if forced, so a plastic pry tool is strongly recommended over metal.
