How the MKT Key System Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (Early)
A 3-button smart key with a Texas 4D (ID4D67) transponder chip and push-button start from day one. Your MKT uses the PATS II immobilizer system, which means the car will not start without a properly programmed key talking to the computer. We program these through the OBD-II port, which is the diagnostic connector under your dash. Straightforward work, no server connection needed.
1st Generation (Mid)
A smart key that looks and works almost identically to the earlier models, still running the Texas 4D (ID4D67) chip and PATS II immobilizer. Lincoln made some minor electronics updates, but the key system stayed the same. OBD-II programming handles everything, and the process is quick and clean on-site.
1st Generation (Late)
A smart key with an upgraded Texas Crypto 4D (ID4D68) chip, which added another layer of encryption to the transponder. The PATS II immobilizer is still running the show, but these later models may require server authentication during programming. That means our tools need to verify with Ford's servers before the key goes live. We carry the equipment and subscriptions to handle that on the spot.
Which Key Does Your MKT Use?
This is a proximity smart key. It stays in your pocket or purse, and the car unlocks when you grab the door handle. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.
Same smart key design as the earlier models. Push-button start, proximity entry, and a high-security blade tucked inside the fob. Fully compatible with the 2010-2012 key system.
Looks the same as earlier MKT keys, but the internal chip is upgraded to a Crypto 4D. You will not notice any difference in how it works. The difference is under the hood during programming.

Common MKT Key Problems
Smart Key Fob Battery Drain
Fob buttons stop responding, or the car ignores the smart key at the door handle. Intelligent Access proximity sensors drain CR2032s much faster, especially if the fob lives on a garage hook. Fresh CR2032 and store the fob 10 feet from the car.
Transponder Programming Failures
Root cause on 2016-2019 MKT non-takes is almost always a server auth requirement that surprises people. OBD-II programming needs a precise PIN from the BCM; tool not updated or server drops, key will not register. Ford-compatible tools in Oxnard.
High Security Blade Wear
Before recommending a new key, we check the emergency blade first. These laser-cut blades wear faster than expected, and a worn blade will not turn the cylinder when the fob battery dies. Blade is the issue, we cut a fresh one on-site with an HU100 cutter.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Owners think the fob is broken when the real problem is PATS lost sync after a dead car battery. Common on 2010-2015 models. Vehicle battery replacement or a hard jump can knock transponder communication out of alignment. Fix is a full OBD-II relearn.
Can You Program a Key Yourself?
If you already have two working smart keys, you can program a third one yourself using the on-board procedure. Place the new key in the center console pocket, follow a specific sequence of unlock, brake, lock, brake, and start button presses, and the car enters programming mode. Maximum of 4 keys total. If you only have one key or zero keys, you need a locksmith.
Same two-key self-programming procedure as the earlier models. You need two working smart keys to add a third. The steps are identical: console pocket, unlock three times, brake, lock three times, brake, start button. All steps must happen within 30 seconds. If you only have one key, call us at (805) 790-8162.
Self-programming still works on these later models if you have two existing keys. The procedure is the same as earlier years. However, if you are down to one key or no keys, the Crypto 4D chip and potential server authentication requirement means this is a professional job. Do not risk bricking the immobilizer.
