2012 Lincoln MKT Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A warehouse manager over in the Wildwood neighborhood of Thousand Oaks called me about his 2012 Lincoln MKT. Another locksmith had made him a key about eight days earlier. It worked at first, then started acting up. Mornings were fine. By evening, the theft light would rapid-flash during cranking and the dash would throw "No Key Detected" on push-to-start.
He thought his car had an electrical problem. Talked about taking it to the dealer for a full diagnostic.
I pulled his bad fob apart on the hood. Ran my VVDI2 to read the transponder chip and there it was: 40-bit 4D63. His MKT needs the 80-bit version. The 40-bit can pass the surface-level handshake with the PATS module and start the car a handful of times. But the BCM on these eventually runs a longer verification cycle, and when the bit depth comes back wrong, it locks you out. It is a slow failure, which makes it confusing.
Programmed a new key with the correct 80-bit 4D63 chip, cut a fresh emergency blade to HU101 profile, and while I was at it, cracked open the M3N5WY8406 fob shell. His CR2032 was reading 2.7 volts, low enough to shorten passive detection range and make the problem look even worse than it was.
New battery, correct chip, full button test on all four functions. That was months ago. Still running fine.
The difference between his first key and the one I made is a chip you cannot see without the right reader.
