Out near Rincon Beach Park in Ventura, a warehouse manager flagged me down about his 2019 Lincoln MKT. Another locksmith had made him a key about a week earlier. It worked fine for the first few days, then started acting up.
Mornings, it would start. By evening, the theft light on the dash would flash rapid and the push-button start screen would read "No Key Detected." He thought the car had an electrical gremlin. Almost had it towed.
I pulled his fob apart on the tailgate and ran it through my VVDI2. The other tech had programmed a 40-bit chip instead of the 80-bit that the 2019 MKT's PATS module requires. A 40-bit chip can pass the initial handshake and even start the car a handful of times, but the BCM on the D4 platform runs deeper verification cycles over multiple start events. Eventually it catches the mismatch and locks the fob out entirely. It is one of those failures that looks intermittent but is actually predictable.
Programmed a new 80-bit key, paired the M3N-5WY8609 fob through the OBD-II port, and swapped in a fresh CR2032 because his was reading low. Tested push-to-start, passive entry on all four doors, and the liftgate button.
He texted me a couple months later. Still working, no theft light. The whole difference was the chip generation inside the key.
