How Lincoln MKZ Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (A2 Platform)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a Texas 4D (4D63) transponder chip inside the head that talks to your PATS immobilizer every time you start the car. Standard blade, CR2032 battery in the fob, three buttons. If that chip fails or you lose the key, the car will not start no matter what. We program replacements through your OBD-II port, which is the diagnostic connector under your dash.
Second Generation (Fusion Platform)
Lincoln moved to a high-security HU101 blade here, so your key cannot be duplicated at a hardware store. Still uses the 4D63 chip and PATS II immobilizer, still three buttons, still a CR2032 battery. The difference is the blade requires a specialized cutter, and the security PIN retrieval is more involved. We handle all of that on-site with OBD-II programming.
Second Generation Facelift
This is where Lincoln added push-button start and a proximity smart key. Your MKZ now recognizes the fob in your pocket and lets you walk up, unlock, and start without pulling out a key. Same 4D63 chip, same CR2032 battery, same three buttons, but the programming requires advanced tools like the Xhorse VVDI or Autel IM608 to pair the smart key to your car.
Third Generation
The final production years kept the same smart key setup: push-button start, 4D63 chip, high-security blade, PATS II, three buttons. Hybrid models have slight variations in how the electronics sync, but the key itself is identical. We program these through OBD-II on-site, though some edge cases on hybrids may need a dealer follow-up. We will tell you that before we start.
Which Key Does Your MKZ Use?
A traditional key you insert and turn. The remote buttons handle lock, unlock, and trunk. There is a transponder chip inside the key head that your car checks every time you start it.
Looks similar to the older key but has a thicker, laser-cut blade that cannot be copied at a hardware store. Three buttons, same CR2032 battery. Requires professional cutting and OBD-II programming.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your MKZ detects it automatically for keyless entry and push-button start. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside the fob for when the battery dies.
Same proximity smart key as the 2017-2018 models. Push-button start, three buttons, CR2032 battery. The emergency blade tucked inside gets you in the door if the fob battery dies.

Common Lincoln MKZ Key Problems
Transponder Failure (2007-2012)
Key goes in, turns, engine will not crank, theft light flashing. The Texas 4D chip in your key head has failed, usually from years of heat sitting on a dashboard in Oxnard or Camarillo. We test the chip on-site and program a new key with a fresh transponder.
Ignition Cylinder Wear (2007-2016)
Owners blame the key when the real issue is a worn ignition cylinder. Tumblers grind down over time, making the key hard to turn or refusing it. We check the cylinder first since replacing a key will not fix a worn ignition. Cylinder work, we handle that.
Smart Key Battery Drain (2017-2020)
The proximity fob in your 2017+ MKZ broadcasts low-power constantly. Left in a cupholder or console it can drain your 12V overnight. Feels like a dead car, but it is not the engine or fob. Replace the CR2032 and check the 12V. Still no start, (805) 790-8162.
PIN Code Retrieval Issues (2013-2020)
Some locksmiths show up to your 2013+ MKZ and cannot pull the security PIN needed for programming. Without NASTF VSP subscription and the right tools, the computer will not give up the code. We carry NASTF credentials and Autel IM608 on every call.
Can You Program a Lincoln MKZ Key Yourself?
Yes, if you already have two working original keys. You can add a third using the Ford PATS two-key method: cycle both existing keys in the ignition in sequence, then insert the new pre-cut key. The security light illuminates for three seconds to confirm. For the remote fob buttons, there is a separate procedure that involves cycling the ignition eight times quickly. But if you only have one key or zero keys, this will not work and you need professional OBD-II programming.
No DIY option here. The 2013-2016 MKZ requires OBD-II diagnostic equipment and a security PIN to program any new key. You cannot do this at home, and hardware store copies will not start the car. Call us at (805) 790-8162.
Same situation as the 2013-2016. The smart key system on your push-button start MKZ does not support any self-programming procedure. Every new key needs to be paired through the OBD-II port with professional tools.
No self-programming available. The 2019-2020 MKZ requires a licensed locksmith or dealer with OBD-II access to add or replace keys. We handle this on-site in about 30 to 60 minutes.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Lincoln MKZ shares its platform with the Ford Fusion. Under the luxury trim and Lincoln badging, the bones are the same CD3 and later CD4 architecture. That means the key systems, blade types, and immobilizer technology are nearly identical between a $25,000 Fusion and a $45,000 MKZ.
