2020 Lincoln MKZ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2020 MKZ?

The smart key on your MKZ is a proximity fob that the car detects when you approach. It has five buttons and an emergency metal key blade folded inside for situations where the battery dies or the door handle sensor needs a backup. The transponder chip inside the fob communicates with the vehicle security system to authorize the engine to run. That communication has to be set up during programming.

Q: How long does the Lincoln dealer usually take for a key replacement on a 2020 MKZ?

Longer than most people expect. MKZ owners on forums have reported waiting a week or more just to get an appointment, then another wait if the dealer has to order the fob. The enrollment process itself has a timed sequence built into the security system, so the tech cannot rush it. Add in the service write-up, the wait for a bay, and any parts sourcing, and a same-day turnaround at a dealer is not guaranteed.

Q: I have one working key for my 2020 MKZ. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I actually need one?

Get it now. When you still have a working key, enrollment is a simple add-a-key procedure. If that last key is lost or stops working before you have a spare, the job becomes an all-keys-lost situation, which requires a full security reset and takes more time. It also costs more. The smart move is a second fob while the first one is still functioning. I can do that at your place in Oxnard in one stop.

Q: My 2020 MKZ fob shell is cracked and the buttons feel mushy. Do I need a whole new programmed key or can the internals be saved?

In most cases the internals can be transferred. The circuit board and the transponder chip inside are the parts that hold the programming. The plastic shell, the buttons, and the metal blade are all replaceable without touching the electronics. If the board is undamaged, a shell swap keeps your existing enrollment intact and gets you a clean fob that feels new again. I see this regularly.

2020 Lincoln MKZ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked along the water at Channel Islands Harbor when she called. A real estate agent, running between showings, and her MKZ was giving her a key-not-detected warning every few minutes even though the fob was right in her hand. Not dead, not lost. Just intermittent enough to be maddening.

When she pulled up I asked the first question I always ask on these: when did you last swap the battery. She said she hadn't, but the car was only three years old so she figured it was fine. It wasn't. The CR2450 was reading low enough that the car was dropping the signal under load, which explains the ghost behavior. Works sometimes, fails at the worst moment.

I swapped the battery on the spot. Verified range front and rear, checked door-handle touch response, and ran through all five buttons. Everything came back clean. No new fob needed, no dealer visit, no week-long wait.

She mentioned the dealer had already quoted her a full replacement fob the last time she called them about the intermittent issue. Nobody there suggested the battery. That quote was sitting in her email, and it was not a small number. She saved a significant chunk just by having someone actually check the simple thing first.

That is the job I prefer. One quick diagnosis, one small part, done in the harbor parking lot between her 11 and 1 o'clock appointments.

Lincoln MKZ Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Lincoln dealer to get a replacement key for my 2020 MKZ?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith can cut and enroll a replacement smart key for a 2020 MKZ on site. The vehicle security system on these uses the same enrollment infrastructure as other Ford-platform vehicles, and professional automotive diagnostic tools handle it without a dealer login. The idea that luxury nameplates require dealer-only service gets repeated a lot, but it is not accurate for key replacement on this car.
