2012 Lincoln MKZ Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy near Hot Springs Trail in Montecito called me about his 2012 Lincoln MKZ. He had just bought it used, one key in the glovebox, and the selling dealer told him to handle the spare on his own time. He called the Lincoln dealer and got quoted a wait of over a week plus a number that made him go quiet on the phone.
He found me online and the first thing he asked was whether the dealer price was normal. I told him it was. Overhead, parts markup, shop time billed at full rate. Then I told him what I charge and he just said, "When can you come."
I met him in his driveway before his morning commute. The MKZ uses the CWTWB1U793 remote head key with an HU101 blade profile, so I cut the blade on my mobile machine and matched it to his door and ignition. Then I connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port and ran the Ford PATS security access. There is a timed countdown the system forces you through, about 10 minutes per key, while the PCM and the instrument cluster module (IC, part of the body electronics on this platform) handshake and accept the new transponder ID.
Both keys tested clean: remote lock, unlock, trunk, and a cold start with each one. He pocketed the spare and left for work.
That second key also means if he ever loses one, the next job is a simple add-a-key instead of an all-keys-lost procedure, which saves a good chunk.
