About Chevrolet Keys

Chevrolet key replacement overview in Ventura County

From vintage C/K trucks with VATS resistor keys to late-model Silverados with encrypted push-to-start fobs, Chevrolet spans more key generations than almost any brand on the road. We carry the parts and tools to handle all of them, right at your location.

Every Chevrolet Key Type, Cut and Programmed On the Spot

Chevrolet

Chevrolet introduced electronic anti-theft technology earlier than most people realize. The original VATS system debuted on the 1986 Corvette with a resistor pellet in the blade, and by 1999 GM had rolled out transponder chip keys on the Silverado and Tahoe. The 2007 GMT900 trucks brought proximity smart keys to the mainstream, and today the full Chevy lineup runs encrypted push-to-start systems that require specialized programming tools.

Chevrolet Every Generation in Stock

Every Generation in Stock

We stock blades, remotes, and transponders for the complete range, from Texas 46 chip keys in the early 2000s to the modern flip fobs and HITAG Pro keys on 2014 and newer models. Whether you drive a 2003 Impala or a 2022 Tahoe, we come to you, cut the key on site, program the transponder, and get you back on the road without a dealer appointment or a tow.

Chevrolet Silverado Key Replacement

Chevrolet

The Silverado is the most commonly serviced Chevrolet we see, and it is also one of the most varied when it comes to key systems.

Chevrolet Generation By Generation

Generation By Generation

The GMT800 generation (1999 to 2006) uses a Texas 46 transponder chip that can be cloned or OBD-programmed with the right tools. The GMT900 generation (2007 to 2013) stepped up to an ID48 encrypted chip, with flip-style proximity fobs and on-site programming via OBD. The K2XX generation (2014 to 2018) added HITAG Pro encryption and pushed all-keys-lost jobs to a PIN-based process. The T1XX generation (2019 to 2020) kept that same framework.

Chevrolet The 2021 Techline Shift

The 2021 Techline Shift

Then the 2021 and newer Silverado moved to GM's server-based Techline Connect system, which locks out third-party programming entirely. Knowing which generation you have is the first step, and we can identify it instantly from your VIN.

Chevy Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Chevrolet dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Chevrolet dealers charge $330 to $900 or more for a smart key replacement, plus a diagnostic fee on top of that. Wait times run 1 to 3 days for a standard appointment, and an all-keys-lost job can take even longer. We come to you, program on site, and do it for significantly less with no tow, no waiting room, and no surprises.

Chevrolet Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Chevrolet Dead Key Fob Battery
Dead Key Fob Battery
The most common Chevrolet fob failure. Most models use a CR2032, though some older or compact fobs use a CR1632. Symptoms start with reduced range and sluggish response before the fob stops working entirely. A fresh battery fixes it in under two minutes and no reprogramming is needed afterward.
Chevrolet Cracked Shell or Unresponsive Buttons
Cracked Shell or Unresponsive Buttons
Pre-2015 Chevrolet fobs are known for cracking shells, especially after years of pocket carry in the Southern California heat. Once the shell cracks, button contacts corrode and stop making contact with the circuit board. In many cases the fob electronics are still good and only the shell needs to be swapped out. We assess on the spot.
Chevrolet Smart Key Not Detected by the Vehicle
Smart Key Not Detected by the Vehicle
Silverados, Tahoes, and other push-to-start Chevys frequently display a no key detected message when the fob battery is running low. Range drops first, then detection fails entirely. Test by placing the fob directly against the start button. If the vehicle starts that way, a low battery is most likely the issue.
Chevrolet RCDLR Module Failure on 2006 and Newer Trucks
RCDLR Module Failure on 2006 and Newer Trucks
The Remote Control Door cylinder Receiver module in 2006 and newer Silverado and Avalanche trucks is prone to failure from heat cycling that breaks solder joints inside the module. When it fails, new fobs will not program even with the correct tools. The fix requires module replacement. We can diagnose this on site before recommending next steps.

How Chevrolet Keys Have Changed Over the Years

Chevrolet VATS Resistor Key (1986 to 1996)
1986 to 1996
VATS Resistor Key
GM introduced the Vehicle Anti-Theft System on the 1986 Corvette. VATS keys have a small resistor pellet embedded in the blade. The ignition reads the resistance and blocks the starter if it does not match. There are 15 possible resistance values, and the key must match the car exactly.
Chevrolet Transponder Chip Key (Texas 46 / PK3) (1997 to 2006)
1997 to 2006
Transponder Chip Key (Texas 46 / PK3)
GM transitioned from resistor pellets to radio-frequency transponder chips. The Texas 46 chip used on 1999 to 2006 Silverados and similar models is cloneable in the field. These keys look like standard remote head keys but contain a chip in the plastic head that the ignition ring must verify before allowing the engine to start.
Chevrolet Encrypted Transponder / Proximity Flip Fob (ID48) (2007 to 2013)
2007 to 2013
Encrypted Transponder / Proximity Flip Fob (ID48)
The GMT900 Silverado and Tahoe introduced ID48 encrypted chips alongside proximity smart keys with push-to-start. Flip fobs with 4-button layouts became common. OBD programming with tools like Autel or Smart Pro handles these on site. Two working keys are often required to enter self-programming mode.
Chevrolet HITAG Pro / Push-to-Start Smart Key (2014 to 2020)
2014 to 2020
HITAG Pro / Push-to-Start Smart Key
HITAG Pro encryption replaced ID48 across the lineup. All-keys-lost jobs now require a PIN retrieved via OBD, but mobile locksmiths with the right tools can still handle most situations in the field. The fob design moved to larger, more ergonomic proximity remotes with dedicated remote start buttons.

What to Do When Your Chevrolet Fob Dies

1
Chevrolet fob backup step 1

Check which cup holder your model uses. Equinox, Traverse, and Blazer use the left (driver's side) cup holder. Silverado trucks, Tahoe, Suburban, and Colorado use the right cup holder closest to the driver. Malibu and some older push-start models have a key slot on or near the steering column.

2
Chevrolet fob backup step 2

Place the fob face up or face down in the correct cup holder. The vehicle's antennas are built into the console and will detect the fob's passive transponder even with a completely dead battery.

3
Chevrolet fob backup step 3

Press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then press the start button normally. The car should start even though the fob shows no charge.

4
Chevrolet fob backup step 4

If the vehicle still does not start, move the fob to a different position in the cup holder or try holding it directly against the start button itself. If your 12-volt battery is also dead, the fob method will not work and you will need a jump first.

5
Chevrolet fob backup step 5

Once you are moving, replace the fob battery as soon as possible. Most Chevrolet fobs use a CR2032. Press the side release to pop out the emergency blade, then pry the fob case open at the seam with a coin and swap the battery. No reprogramming is needed.

Chevrolet Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
