How Aveo Key Technology Changed Over the Years
Early T200: Basic Transponder Key
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is an ID46 chip inside the plastic head that talks to your car's immobilizer. No remote buttons, no battery to worry about. Just a standard blade with a transponder chip that has to match your Aveo's security system before the engine will start.
Mid T200: Remote Head Key Arrives
You turn this key the same way, but now there are three buttons built into the head for lock, unlock, and trunk. The transponder is still an ID46 chip, and the remote runs on a CR1632 battery. GM upgraded to Passlock II security here, which means programming requires an OBD-II scan tool plugged into the port under your dash.
Late T200: Updated Chip, Same Layout
You turn this key and it feels identical to the 2007-2008 version, three buttons, same blade, same CR1632 battery. But GM continued with a Megamos Crypto 48 (ID48) transponder, with some later units running a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip. Programming still goes through OBD-II, though on-board procedures can work in some cases. Assembly shifted to Mexico by 2010, but the key system stayed consistent.
Which Key Does Your Aveo Use?
A simple metal key with a chip hidden inside the plastic head. No buttons, no battery. It just needs to be cut correctly and programmed to your car's immobilizer.
Looks like a regular key but the head has lock, unlock, and trunk buttons built in. The transponder chip and remote are all in one piece, so you only carry one item.
Same physical design as the 2007-2008 key, same three buttons, same battery. The difference is inside: GM ran a Megamos Crypto 48 (ID48) or Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder on these years, which changes how we program it.

Common Aveo Key and Ignition Problems
Passlock Sensor Failure
Security light flashing, engine cranking but not catching? Passlock sensor in the cylinder has failed, common on 2004-2010 Aveos. We diagnose on-site in Simi Valley and either bypass or replace the sensor.
Transponder Chip Recognition Loss
Owners assume the key died, but a battery disconnect or jump start scrambled the ECM. Your 2004-2008 Aveo lost its handshake with the transponder chip. We reprogram the key to the immobilizer through OBD-II in about 20 minutes.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
The CR1632 in your 2007-2010 Aveo remote head key drains fast if buttons get pressed in your pocket. We check for an internal short first, because a shorted board kills a fresh battery just as fast. Board fine? A fresh CR1632 and you are good.
Ignition Lock Cylinder Wear
We check how the key sits in the cylinder first. The standard blade on Aveos wears down ignition wafers, causing hard starts or a key that will not turn. Cylinder replacement on-site, security relearn done so the transponder still talks to the immobilizer.
Can You Program an Aveo Key Yourself?
No self-programming option for these years. The transponder requires a professional OBD-II tool or dealer equipment to sync with the immobilizer. Call us and we handle it on-site.
If you already have one working programmed key, you can add a spare using a quick insert-and-turn procedure. Turn the existing key to ON for 5 seconds, switch to the new key within 5 seconds, and turn it to ON. This only works for adding transponder keys, not remotes, and does not help if all keys are lost.

Did You Know?
Back in the early 2000s, GM did something unusual with the Aveo. The car was originally the Daewoo Kalos, designed and built in South Korea. When GM acquired Daewoo's assets, they slapped a Chevy bowtie on it and sold it as the Aveo for the U.S. market. The same car also wore Pontiac and Suzuki badges in different countries.
