How Chevy S-10 Keys Changed Over the Years

Early T10 Platform

1999-2000

Chevy kept things simple here with a standard mechanical key and optional remote fob. These early S-10 years run GM's Passlock system in the ignition cylinder, not VATS. There is no resistor pellet in the blade and no transponder chip in the key. We cut by code and run the Passlock relearn when needed.

PK3 Security Added

2001-2002

GM continued with the Passlock system on these years. Your key is still a standard cut metal blade with no transponder chip. The 3-button remote head with CR2032 battery handles your doors and panic. We cut, program the remote, and run the Passlock relearn on-site.

Final S-10 Years

2003-2004

Chevy carried the same Passlock system through the S-10's final production years. Same remote head key with no transponder chip, same 3-button layout, same on-board procedure. These last-year trucks are identical to the 2001-2002 models from a key standpoint, so parts and programming are straightforward.

Ignition Lock Cylinder Wear

Years of use wear down the wafers in your S-10 cylinder, and the key feels loose, sticks, or will not turn to start. We replace the cylinder on-site and cut a new key to match, so you skip a tow from a Simi Valley parking lot.

Remote Fob Sync Loss

Press lock, nothing happens. S-10 remote fobs lose programming after a battery swap or someone trying to add a fob without including the old ones. Fix is a full on-board re-sync of every remote you own. About 10 minutes.

Passlock/PK3 Malfunction

Owners blame the starter or battery when the real problem is security. On 1999-2000 the Passlock sensor in the cylinder drifts. On 2001-2004 the sensor can fail and the BCM stops trusting it. We test security first so you do not pay for unneeded parts.

Can You Program an S-10 Key Yourself?

Yes, you can program the remote buttons yourself using the ignition key and the driver's door unlock switch. Close all doors, hold the unlock button on the door panel, cycle the ignition on and off twice quickly, then release. When the locks cycle, press lock and unlock on each fob until the locks cycle again. You must program every fob you own in one session, or the old ones stop working.

2001-2004 (Transponder Relearn)

If you already have one working transponder key, you can add a new one using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure. Insert the working key, turn to on, wait for the security light to stop flashing, swap to the new key within 10 seconds, and wait about 10 minutes for the light to go out. This only works if you have at least one good key. All keys lost requires a scan tool.

Can I program a new remote key fob myself on my 2001 Chevy S-10? ▼

Yes, but only for the remote buttons, not the transponder chip. Close all doors, insert your ignition key without turning it, hold the driver's door unlock button, then cycle the ignition on-off-on-off quickly. Release the unlock button when the door cylinders cycle. Then press and hold lock plus unlock on each fob until the locks cycle again. You must do every fob you own in one session, old and new, or the old ones get erased. What key blank do I need for a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 ignition replacement? ▼

The one you want is the P1113/B102 blank. That is the standard key for all 1999-2004 S-10 models, and it works for both the ignition and the doors. Do not grab the older P1107/B89; it looks similar but will not fit your cylinder correctly. We carry the right blank on every truck and can cut it from code or by impression right in your driveway. If your 2003 does not have a transponder, there is no programming needed at all.

Does the 1999-2004 S-10 have a transponder chip in the key? ▼

Here is the honest answer: it depends on your exact year. The 1999-2000 S-10 generally does not have a transponder chip. Just a mechanical key cut to code. The 2001-2004 models with PK3 (Pass-Key III) do have a Texas 4D transponder chip in the key head. Either way, the remote fob programs separately using the door unlock and ignition cycle procedure. My S-10 remote stopped working after trying to add a new one-what happened? ▼

Your old fobs got erased. The S-10's on-board programming wipes all previously stored remotes every time you enter programming mode. If you did not include your existing fobs in that session, the truck forgot them. The fix is simple: run the procedure again from the beginning and program every single fob, old and new, one right after the other. Close all doors, hold the door unlock button, cycle the ignition on-off twice, release when the locks cycle, then press lock plus unlock on each fob.
