How Bravada Keys Changed Over the Years
Second Generation (U100)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a chip inside doing the real work. Your 1998-2001 Bravada uses a resistor pellet in the key blade paired with GM's VATS immobilizer system. There is no transponder chip in these earlier keys. On-board programming keeps things relatively simple, and we handle the whole process at your location in about 20 minutes.
Second Generation (U100) Late
GM upgraded your Bravada to a remote head key with a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip and the PK3 (Pass-Key III) immobilizer system. That means the key now has lock, unlock, and panic buttons built right into the head. Programming requires OBD-II access and a security PIN, which we pull on-site with our tools.
Third Generation (U200)
The final Bravada moved to the GMT360 platform but kept the PK3 (Pass-Key III) immobilizer with the same Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip family. This is the most advanced security Oldsmobile ever put in an SUV. OBD-II programming with BCM sync is required, and we carry the right tools to handle it in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Bravada Use?
A standard-blade VATS key with a resistor pellet visible in the blade. There is no transponder chip in the plastic head on these early Bravadas.
Your key and remote are combined into one unit with lock, unlock, and panic buttons. Uses a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip that communicates with the PK3 immobilizer.
Same remote head key design as the 2002-2003, using the same PK3 (Pass-Key III) immobilizer and Megamos 13 (ID13) chip family.
The Real Cost of a Bravada Key
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95-$125.

Common Bravada Key Problems
VATS Pellet Wear
Your 1998-1999 Bravada cranks but will not start, security light on. The VATS resistor pellet on your key blade has worn from years of use, and the system can no longer read the resistance. We test with an ohm meter on-site and cut a new matched key or install a bypass module.
Transponder Sync Failure
On 2002-2003 Bravadas, the BCM lost its PK3 transponder memory during a battery disconnect. Your chip is fine, but the car forgot it. We run an OBD relearn that re-syncs the Megamos 13 (ID13) chip to your BCM, usually under 30 minutes.
Fob Signal Weakness
The remote on your 2002-2004 Bravada is losing range. Used to unlock across the Simi Valley lot, now you stand at the door. Corrosion builds on the circuit board, coastal in Oxnard. We open the fob, replace the CR2032, clean the contacts. If the board is shot, we clone the remote.
Immobilizer Antenna Ring Fault
First check on a 2004 Bravada no-start is the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder. This coil reads your Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder. When it fails, the PK3 system blocks the engine though the key is fine. We diagnose with a scan tool and replace on-site.
Can You Program a Bravada Key Yourself?
You can program the keyless entry remote yourself using the GM door unlock ignition cycle method. Transponder programming still requires professional tools, so call us for that part.
The remote buttons can be self-programmed with the same GM ignition cycle procedure. The Megamos 13 (ID13) PK3 transponder requires OBD-II programming with a PIN, which is where we come in.
Remote pairing works the same way as earlier models. But the PK3 transponder requires professional OBD-II programming with BCM sync. That is a call-us situation.

Did You Know?
Back in 1998, Oldsmobile did something unusual: they launched the Bravada as the brand's only SUV. It shared the GMT330 platform with the Chevy Blazer but came loaded with upscale features like leather seats and a premium audio system. It turned out to be Oldsmobile's final SUV before the entire brand was discontinued in 2004.
