Got a call from a guy down at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. His 2004 Bravada had been sitting in a marina parking lot for three days because it cranked and cranked but wouldn't fire. The security light on the dash was solid. He'd already had it towed once, then towed back after the shop told him they couldn't get to it for a week.
When I pulled up, he was sitting on the tailgate of a friend's truck, holding the remote in one hand and a bag of fast food in the other. He said he'd been pressing the remote buttons over and over, thinking the remote dying had something to do with the no-start. Understandable, but that's not how this system works.
The 2004 Bravada runs GM Passlock II. The security sensor is in the ignition housing, not in the key. The remote handles doors and panic, nothing else. His problem was a failing Passlock sensor giving the BCM (body control module, GM part number 15116066 on these) a bad resistance reading. The BCM sees the wrong value and kills fuel injector pulse.
I ran diagnostics through the OBD-II port, reset the Passlock relearn procedure, and while I was at it swapped the dead CR2032 in his remote so the lock and unlock buttons came back to life.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away. When the engine caught on the first crank, he just kind of nodded and took a bite of his burrito. That was it. No drama, no second tow, and way less than what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
