Got a call on a Sunday morning from a guy out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura. His 2000 Bravada was sitting in the lot, doors locked, and his only remote had quit on him sometime overnight. He had already tried pressing the buttons harder, which is always the first instinct.
When I got there he was sitting on the tailgate of a friend's truck, holding the remote like it owed him money. I popped the back off the KOBUT1BT right there. The CR2032 was corroded around one contact, green crud creeping across the board. Cleaned the battery terminals on the remote's circuit board, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, panic, and hatch release.
Then I checked the key itself. The 2000 Bravada runs GM's Passlock system in the ignition cylinder, and his key had some decent wear on the blade. Not enough to cause a no-start yet, but getting close to the point where the Passlock sensor misreads the resistance and throws a theft deterrent lockout. Cut him a fresh key on the spot, matched to the original.
He thought the remote and the ignition key were the same system. A lot of Bravada owners do. On this generation, they are completely separate. Remote handles the doors. Key and Passlock handle starting. He drove off with both working, on a Sunday, no appointment, no dealer wait.
