How Silhouette Keys Changed Over the Years
First Generation (U-Body)
GM kept things simple here. Your 1995 or 1996 Silhouette uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no immobilizer system at all. We cut it on the spot and you drive away. No programming, no electronics, just metal.
Second Generation (GM Minivan)
GM stepped things up with the VATS system, which stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System. Your key now has a VATS resistor pellet embedded in the blade (15 possible resistance values), and the van will not start without the correct resistance reading. Programming requires EEPROM work or on-board procedures, but we handle that with our Autel IM608 right in your driveway.
Third Generation (Updated U-Van)
This is where security got serious. The 2001 and later Silhouettes run GM's PK3 (Pass-Key III) immobilizer with a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip inside a remote head key with three buttons. Programming goes through the OBD-II port under your dash, and the BCM needs to learn each key. We do it all on-site with no dealer involvement.
Which Key Does Your Silhouette Use?
A simple metal key with no chip and no remote. The easiest and cheapest Silhouette key to replace.
Looks like a regular key but has a small VATS resistor pellet embedded in the blade. Your van will not start without the correct resistance reading.
Your key and remote are built into one unit with lock, unlock, and panic buttons. Contains a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip for the PK3 immobilizer.
What Your Silhouette Key Costs

Common Silhouette Key Problems
VATS Pellet Wear
The resistor pellet on your VATS key wears, the root cause of most no-starts on 1997-2000 Silhouettes. The ignition reads pellet resistance; when worn, the reading drifts. We measure with an ohmmeter and cut a new key with the correct pellet value or install a bypass module.
Transponder Sync Failure
Affects 1997-2004 models when the immobilizer cannot recognize the transponder. After a battery replacement, failed DIY programming, or old transponder data not cleared before adding a new key. We connect through OBD-II, wipe the old data, and reprogram from scratch.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
9/10 on 2001-2004 Silhouettes, it is a dead CR2032. These three-button remotes drain faster than expected. Pop the case open, swap the battery, test. If buttons do not respond, the circuit board may be damaged and you will need a replacement fob programmed.
Ignition Cylinder Failure
We check the ignition cylinder first on any Silhouette that is hard to start or will not turn. Years of heavy family use wear the internal wafers. Key feels loose or you jiggle it. GM issued recall 96V142000 on 1995-1996 models. We replace the cylinder on-site and rekey to your existing key.
Can You Program a Silhouette Key Yourself?
No programming needed or possible. These are plain mechanical keys with no chip. You just need a correctly cut blank.
You can program keyless entry remotes yourself using the BCM PRGRM fuse method. Pull the fuse, cycle the ignition, and hold the lock and unlock buttons for 15 seconds until you hear two chimes. This only programs the remote buttons. It does not program the transponder chip for starting the van.
If you already have one working programmed key, you can add a new transponder key using GM's 10-second relearn procedure. Insert the working key, turn to ON, turn off, then insert the new key within 10 seconds. The security light should go out to confirm. If all keys are lost, you need professional equipment and should call us at (805) 790-8162.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 1995-1996 Oldsmobile Silhouette was one of the last Oldsmobile models built without any electronic immobilizer at all. It relied entirely on mechanical security before GM rolled out the VATS system across the minivan lineup. By the time the Silhouette ended production in 2004, Oldsmobile itself was being discontinued, making these vans a quiet footnote in GM's long history.
