Venture Key Technology by Generation
First Generation (U-body)
This is where security got serious for GM minivans. Your Venture uses a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip embedded in the key head, paired with GM's Passlock anti-theft system in the ignition cylinder. Standard blade cut, no fancy laser cuts. On-board programming is possible with a working key.
Which Key Does Your Venture Use?
Your Venture key is a standard metal blade with a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip hidden inside the plastic head. There are no buttons on the key itself. If you have a remote fob for locks and panic, that is a separate piece and uses a CR2032 battery.

Common Venture Key Problems
Transponder Synchronization Loss
Your Venture Pass Key lost connection to the chip in your key. Happens after a battery replacement, jump start, or under-dash electrical work. Engine cranks and dies because the computer does not see the transponder. We reprogram on-site in under 30 minutes.
Pass Key 2/3 System Bypass for Remote Start
We check for a GM 791 bypass module first on any aftermarket remote start that quit or never worked after a Simi Valley install. The problem is almost always a missing or miswired bypass. Venture's transponder blocks any start not from a recognized chip.
All Keys Lost Programming Erases Previous Keys
Venture security light on, locked out. Most people do not realize: the all-keys-lost relearn wipes every previously programmed key from the computer. Permanent. If someone finds your old key later, it will not work. We walk you through this first.
Blade Cut Requirement Before Programming
Owners order a blank transponder key online and try to program without cutting the blade. Will not work. The key must physically turn the cylinder before the computer reads the chip. We cut and program in one visit, no wasted troubleshooting.
Can You Program a Venture Key Yourself?
Yes, you can. GM built a 10-minute ignition cycling procedure into the Venture that works even with zero existing keys. You turn the new cut key to ON for 10 minutes and 30 seconds, cycle it off and back on within 45 seconds, and repeat that three times. It takes about 32 minutes total. The catch: this erases every previously programmed key, and the new key must already be cut to fit your ignition.
If you still have one working key, adding a spare is faster. Insert your working key, turn to ON, wait for the security light to go out, then swap in the new cut key within a few seconds. The computer reads both chips and registers the new one. This method does not erase your existing keys.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Chevrolet Venture was one of the first minivans to use GM's Pass Key 2/3 transponder system. Unlike most vehicles of that era that required expensive dealer equipment for key programming, GM designed the Venture's system with a simple ignition cycling method that anyone could use at home. That made it one of the most accessible transponder systems ever put into a production vehicle.
