Got a call from a guy out near the Newbury Park Bike Path in Thousand Oaks. His 2000 Chevrolet Venture cranked fine but wouldn't fire. Security light glowing steady on the dash. He'd already had it towed home from the trailhead parking area after a family bike ride turned into a two-hour wait.
He told me on the phone he thought the key was worn out. That's the common assumption, and it makes sense if you don't know how Passlock works on these vans.
I got there and checked the key first. It was a B97 blank, worn but still turning the cylinder without binding. The cut was fine. On a 2000 Venture, there's no transponder chip in the key at all. The security is handled inside the ignition lock cylinder housing, where a small Hall-effect sensor reads a magnet as the lock rotates. When that sensor drifts or the wiring from the cylinder develops resistance, the body control module (BCM) sees a mismatch and kills the fuel injectors.
I measured the resistance on the sensor circuit at the BCM connector. It was bouncing. Classic Passlock sensor failure on a 20-plus-year-old GM platform.
I replaced the lock cylinder sensor assembly, ran the relearn procedure through the BCM, and handed him back a van that started on the first turn. He just sat in the driver's seat and turned it off and on three more times like he was testing me. Fair enough.
The dealer had quoted him a tow-in plus a multi-day wait. He drove his kids home that afternoon instead.
