2000 Chevrolet Venture
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you erase a lost or stolen key from my 2000 Venture so it can't be used to start the van?

Yes. When new keys are programmed through an all-keys-lost procedure, the previously enrolled keys are wiped from the system. Whatever key went missing won't start the van after that. Only the keys present and programmed during the new session will work. Worth noting: if the lost key also has a cut blade that fits the door, the immobilizer won't help you there. That's a mechanical issue.

Q: My 2000 Venture key turns but the engine dies right away. Is that a key problem?

That crank-and-stall pattern on these vans is the immobilizer doing its job. It means the key blade fits the cylinder mechanically, but the transponder chip isn't being recognized. Either the chip isn't programmed to that vehicle, or in rarer cases, the chip has failed. A lot of owners have chased this as a fuel or electrical fault and spent money on parts that weren't the problem.

Q: Can I program a key to my 2000 Venture myself at home, or do I need a professional?

There's a self-programming relearn procedure on some early GM vehicles that works if you already have one working programmed key. The process involves a timed sequence using the existing key to authorize a new one. It doesn't work for all-keys-lost situations, and it requires that your one working key is already enrolled in the system. If you have zero working keys, you need a programmer and someone who knows how to use it.

Q: The key I got cut at a hardware store fits the ignition on my 2000 Venture, but the van won't stay running. Did they cut it wrong?

The cut is probably fine. The issue is almost always the chip. Hardware stores and basic key kiosks cut the blade to match your original, but they don't program the transponder. The van's immobilizer reads the chip every time you turn the key. If it doesn't get a valid signal back, it shuts the engine down after a couple of seconds. The blade profile and the chip are two separate things, and you need both to be right.

2000 Chevrolet Venture Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone staying near the Botanic Garden area in Thousand Oaks, visiting family for a stretch. His 2000 Venture was his daily driver back home, and he'd been nursing a worn spare key for a while.

He finally decided to get a proper replacement cut and programmed while he had some downtime. No drama, no emergency. Just a guy being responsible about it before the worn key gave out completely.

He asked me flat out whether an aftermarket blank would hold up as well as going to a dealer. Honest question. The blade is cut to your vehicle either way. The transponder chip in an aftermarket blank, when it's quality sourced, performs the same function as the chip in an OEM blank once it's programmed into the system. The difference you're paying for at a dealer is the logo on the plastic and the service drive overhead.

I cut the replacement key to match his existing lock and programmed the chip to the van's immobilizer right there in the driveway. Tested it in the ignition, let it run, killed it, started it again. Solid.

He mentioned the dealer back home had quoted him more than he expected for what he described as "just a key." That part didn't surprise me. Labor time at a dealership for a job I can do in a driveway adds up fast. He left with a working key and a backup plan if the worn original finally gives out.

Chevrolet Venture Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What happens with all-keys-lost on a 2000 Venture? Can you still get in and start it?▼

Yes, it's handleable without a tow. All-keys-lost on these early 2000s GM vans means the immobilizer has no enrolled key to recognize, so even if you get the door open mechanically, the engine will crank and die. Getting back in is a lockout job first, then programming a new key to the system comes second. The dealer route on this usually means a tow, a wait for a service appointment, and a bill that reflects dealership overhead.
