How Astro Keys Changed Over the Years
Plain Mechanical Key
A simple metal key with no chip, no transponder, no electronics of any kind. Your 1995 to 1998 Astro uses a standard mechanical ignition lock cylinder. We cut it by code using your VIN and you drive away. That is the whole job.
Passlock Standard Key
A standard cut key paired with GM's Passlock anti-theft system. There is no transponder chip in the key on these years. Passlock uses a Hall-effect sensor and a magnet inside the ignition lock cylinder that reads when the right key is turning, not a chip the key carries. We cut the key by code from your VIN and you drive away.
Remote Head Key with Passlock
A remote head key with a 3-button remote built into the key head, still running GM's Passlock anti-theft system. There is no transponder chip in the key on these years; Passlock reads a coded resistance through the lock cylinder. We cut the key by code and program the remote on-site. Your fob uses a CR2032 battery for the lock, unlock, and panic buttons.
Which Key Does Your Astro Use?
A basic metal key with no chip and no remote. It just turns the ignition. The simplest and cheapest key to replace.
Looks like a regular key, and on these years it is. No transponder chip; security runs through Passlock in the ignition cylinder itself.
Your key and remote are one piece. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and panic. No transponder chip; the Passlock system reads the ignition cylinder itself.

Common Astro Key Problems
Passlock Sensor Fault
The Passlock sensor in your 1996-2004 Astro's cylinder drifts and the BCM stops trusting it: cranks but no fire, security light on. We diagnose on-site and swap the cylinder or install a Passlock bypass.
Ignition Cylinder Failure
Past 150K-200K miles the wafers in your Astro cylinder wear, and the key sticks or refuses to turn. Common in Simi Valley and Oxnard. Cylinder swap on-site with an aftermarket-compatible unit, key cut to match.
Passlock Sync Loss
A 2003-2005 Astro that suddenly will not start usually traces to a recent battery disconnect. The Passlock sensor loses its learned value after power interruption. Fix is a 30-minute relearn cycling the ignition through ON. We handle it on-site.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
Most 'broken' Astro remotes are dead CR2032s. Pop the fob, swap the battery positive-side up, you are good. If a fresh battery does not revive it, reprogramming is needed. On-site in Thousand Oaks or anywhere in the county.
Can You Program an Astro Key Yourself?
You can program keyless entry remotes yourself using a jumper wire on the Data Link Port under the dash. No transponder to worry about on these years since the key is purely mechanical.
Remote programming works via the Data Link Port jumper or ignition cycle method. If you have one working transponder key, you can add another using GM's 10-minute relearn procedure. Each key cycle takes about 10 minutes with the security light on. No tools needed, just patience.
For 2003-2004 models, you can pair remotes using the ignition and door unlock button method. The 2005 model year requires diagnostic equipment for remote programming. Transponder keys on all three years can be added using the 10-minute relearn if you already have one working key. All keys lost? That one needs us.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Chevrolet Astro was actually a rear-wheel-drive van with an available all-wheel-drive system and a truck-based 4.3L V6 under the hood. It launched in 1985 as GM's answer to the minivan craze, but it was built more like a small truck than a family hauler. It outlasted competitors like the Ford Aerostar and carved out a loyal following that still keeps these vans on the road today.
