2001 Chevrolet Astro Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in College Park, over in Oxnard, called me about his 2001 Astro cargo van. Said the remote stopped working and now his dealer was telling him he needed a new "programmed key" and to tow the van in. He was already bracing for a big hit.
I asked him a couple of questions and figured out what was going on before I even left the shop. The Astro doesn't have a transponder system. No chip in the key, no immobilizer module, no passlock relearn. It's just a mechanical key and a separate KOBUT1BT remote for the locks. Two different things.
I drove out to his apartment complex, popped open the old remote on his tailgate, and found a dead CR2032 that had been in there long enough to leave a faint white ring on the battery contact. Cleaned the board contacts, dropped in a fresh Energizer CR2032, and the remote lit up first press. Lock, unlock, panic, rear hatch, all four buttons responded clean.
Then I decoded his door lock with my B106 Lishi and cut him a spare mechanical key on the spot, since he'd been running on just one for a while. Tested it in the ignition, doors, and rear.
He kept saying he thought the key had a chip. A lot of people do with these older GMs. The Astro just never got one.
