How the Express Key System Changed Over 25+ Years
Mechanical Key, No Chip
These early Express vans kept things simple. Your key is a plain mechanical cut with no transponder chip and no immobilizer system. We cut it on the spot, hand it to you, and you are driving. No programming needed.
Transponder Key with Passlock
GM stepped things up here with a mixed era. 2003-2007 Express vans still ran Passlock with no transponder chip in the key. From 2008 onward, GM moved to a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) transponder chip in the key head and PK3+ immobilizer. We verify your VIN before cutting so you get the right setup, and program on-board when a working key is present.
Remote Head Key with PK3+
Now your key has buttons built right into the head: lock, unlock, and panic. The chip upgraded to an ID46, and the immobilizer moved to GM's PK3+ system. Programming requires OBD-II access, which means we plug into the diagnostic port under your dash and write the key to your van's computer.
Remote Head Key with Server Authentication
Same remote head key design and ID46 chip as the 2015-2019 models, but GM added server-based authentication on some 2022 and newer vans. That means certain programming steps need to be verified through GM's online servers. We handle this with our Autel IM608 and NASTF credentials, though some scenarios on the newest models may require dealer involvement. We will tell you upfront before we roll out.
Which Key Does Your Express Use?
A simple metal key with no chip and no buttons. We cut it on the spot, no programming required.
Looks like a regular key. 2003-2007 vans have no transponder (Passlock in the cylinder); 2008-2014 vans carry a Philips Crypto 2 (ID46) chip in the plastic head that needs to be programmed to match.
The buttons are built right into the key. Lock, unlock, and panic, plus a transponder chip inside. One piece does everything.
Same look and feel as the 2015-2019 key, but newer models may require online server verification during programming.
Pricing by Generation
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing on the spot; lockouts start at $95.
Us vs. the Dealer
We carry the same Autel IM608 and VVDI platforms the dealer service bay uses. The difference is we bring them to your driveway for about half the price.
Common Express Key and Ignition Problems
Passlock Sensor Failure
The Passlock II/III sensor on the steering column wears out on 2003-2014 Express vans under heavy daily use. Security light flashes, engine refuses to start. We reprogram the BCM or run a Passlock relearn in your Simi Valley driveway.
Transponder Key Chip Failure
Express cranks but will not fire, security light solid: the transponder chip lost sync with the immobilizer, or the chip failed. Affects 2003-2025 models. We test the chip on-site and either reprogram or cut a new key.
Key Fob Battery Drain
Owners assume the remote is broken when buttons stop working. Nine times out of ten a dead CR2032. Fleet Express in Camarillo and Thousand Oaks are prone because buttons get pressed in pockets and tool bags. Pop the fob, swap, done.
PIN Retrieval Issues on 2020+ Models
Before we recommend anything on a 2020+ Express, we check if we can pull the BCM PIN with our tools. GM locked PIN retrieval on some later models so tight only dealer-level access works. We verify before driving out so you never pay for a wasted trip.
Can You Program a Key Yourself?
You can program keyless entry remotes yourself using the ignition key cycle method or the OBD-II jumper wire method. No transponder to worry about since these are mechanical keys.
No DIY option here. The Passlock/PKM immobilizer system requires professional tools and a BCM PIN to program transponder keys. You need a locksmith or dealer.
If you have one working key, you can add a new transponder key using GM's 30-minute relearn process. You turn the ignition on, wait 10 minutes for the security light to go off, turn it off, and repeat three times. Fair warning: this erases all previously learned keys, so have every key you want to keep on hand.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Chevrolet Express has used the GMT610 platform since 2003, making it one of the longest-produced van platforms in automotive history. It also shares its key system with the GMC Savana, so if you have driven both, the keys are essentially interchangeable across the same generation.
