Got a call from a guy up near Meditation Mount in Ojai. His 1999 Chevrolet Express just stopped starting. Engine cranked strong, fired for about two seconds, then quit. Security light on the dash blinking steady. He said another locksmith had already been out, told him the key needed a transponder chip programmed, charged him, cut a new key with a chip in it, and left when the van still would not run.

Here is the thing. The 1999 Express does not use a transponder key. There is no chip in that key head. GM used the Passlock system on these vans, where the security handshake happens between the ignition lock cylinder's internal Hall-effect sensor and the BCM. The key is just a plain mechanical B44P cut.

His actual problem was a failing Passlock sensor inside the ignition cylinder. Resistance was drifting outside the range the BCM expected, so the BCM killed fuel injector pulse after the two-second crank window. Classic Passlock failure pattern on these first-gen Express vans.

I ran the 10-minute relearn right there in his driveway. Key to ON, wait for the Security light to go solid, key off, repeat three times. Thirty minutes of waiting around and the van started clean. I also cut him a fresh B44P key since his original was worn pretty thin on the cuts.

He sat in a camp chair and read a book through the whole relearn. Probably the calmest locksmith call I have had all year.
