1999 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does a 1999 Chevrolet Express actually use?

It's a plain metal key cut to your vehicle's locks and ignition. No remote, no fob, no battery. You insert it, turn it, and the engine starts. That's the whole system on this generation of Express. Because it's mechanical, replacement is fast. I either duplicate from your existing key or decode the lock cylinder directly to cut a new one from scratch. No waiting on dealer parts, no programming appointments.

Q: My Express is showing a security warning on the dash. What does that mean?

On a 1999 Express, a key-not-detected or security-related warning is worth tracing before assuming the key is the problem. Start with your spare if you have one. If the spare works fine, the issue is likely the original key itself being worn down enough that the tumblers aren't reading it consistently. If neither key works, the ignition cylinder is the next thing to look at.

Q: I lost both keys to my 1999 Express. Can you still make a replacement with no key at all?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a mechanical key van is a standard job. I decode the lock cylinder or the ignition directly to pull the bitting, then cut a new key to that code. No original key needed at any point. On a van this age it's one of the cleaner jobs there is because there's no key memory to clear and no modules to talk to. I show up, decode, cut, and you're driving.

Q: My 1999 Express key turns fine in the door but won't turn in the ignition. Is that a key problem?

Probably not. If the same key works the door lock but fights the ignition, the ignition cylinder is the likely culprit. On a van this old, the ignition tumblers take far more daily wear than the door lock, so they wear out first and at a different rate. Before assuming the worst, try this: with the key inserted, apply light rotational pressure and wiggle the steering wheel side to side to release any column lock tension.

1999 Chevrolet Express Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Ojai, late morning. A guy flagged me down near the shops on Ojai Avenue. He had a 1999 Express, the full-size cargo van, and a key that had snapped off flush in the door lock. He'd already been at it with a pick tool he bought online. Made it worse.

I pulled the broken piece with an extractor, then decoded the lock cylinder while I had it open. That gave me the cut right there without needing to pull paperwork or call anyone. I cut the replacement blade on site, tested it in the door, then walked to the ignition. Turned clean the first try.

He mentioned a dealer in Ventura had quoted him a wait of several days just to get him in the door. I was done in about thirty minutes, standing in the parking lot. He drove off with two working keys, which he hadn't had in a while since he'd been down to the one that just broke.

No modules, no scan tools, no drama. Just a cut key and a guy who could get back to his day.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracked and falling apart. Can you sort it out without any reprogramming?▼

On a 1999 Express, there's nothing to reprogram. The key is purely mechanical, so a worn or cracked shell just means cutting a new key blade to match your locks. Bring the old key in so I can either duplicate the cut directly or decode your lock cylinder if the original is too worn to read accurately. New key, done on site, no electronics involved.
