2009 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know you are not one of those scam locksmiths I keep hearing about?

Ask before anyone rolls. Get the company name, a license number, and a firm written quote for your specific vehicle before a tech shows up. Scam operations low-ball on the phone and inflate the bill in your driveway with invented fees. I have heard from Express owners who were quoted one number and then handed a bill more than double that once the work was done, with vague line items they couldn't argue against on the side of the road.

Q: Will the replacement key work exactly like the original?

Yes. The 2009 Express uses a transponder key with no remote functions. What we deliver is a key cut to your vehicle and a programmed transponder that the immobilizer accepts. We test it in the ignition, confirm the security light behavior is correct, and verify the engine holds a clean start before we leave. You get a working key, not a promise to follow up later.

Q: My 2009 Express starts but the theft light stays on solid after I use the key. What does that mean?

A theft indicator that stays lit after the engine starts, instead of going out within a few seconds, points to an immobilizer communication issue. It can mean the key's transponder isn't being read cleanly, the ignition cylinder is worn enough that the key isn't sitting in the right position, or there's a problem with the module that handles the security handshake. If the van starts and runs normally, the light alone isn't always a crisis, but it shouldn't be ignored.

Q: Can I buy a key blank online and bring it to you to cut and program?

Sometimes, but be careful. The transponder chip inside the key head has to be the correct type for the 2009 Express. Blanks sold online are sometimes mislabeled or have the wrong chip inside even when the blade looks right. If the chip doesn't match what the immobilizer expects, the key won't program, and you've wasted the blank. Bringing your own blank is fine in principle, but I can't guarantee programming success on a key I didn't source.

2009 Chevrolet Express Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in Sunset Hills, out near the Thousand Oaks side where the streets dead-end into the hills. He runs a small business with a 2009 Express and had been putting off cutting a spare key for two years. Then one morning he couldn't find the original. Tore the cab apart looking for it.

By the time he called me, he'd already convinced himself he needed a tow to the dealer.

He didn't. But all-keys-lost on this van does take longer than a simple duplicate, so I explained that before I pulled out of my driveway. He texted me the VIN right then, which mattered. With the VIN I had his key code on file before I arrived and cut the blade on the road.

When I got there the van was parked on the street, barn doors facing uphill. I coded the transponder, ran the security relearn, and tested it in the ignition until the theft light cleared and the engine held idle. He found his original key wedged under the driver's seat about four minutes after I handed him the new one.

He didn't need the dealer. He needed a mobile guy with the right tools and a VIN texted in advance.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Chevrolet vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz is licensed through the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, the state agency that regulates automotive locksmiths. We carry full liability insurance. For a transponder key job on a 2009 Express, you want someone who has passed the credentialing and background checks that come with that license, because the work involves the vehicle's immobilizer system and you need accountability if anything goes sideways.
