2016 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you erase a lost or stolen key so it no longer starts my Express?

Yes. When we do an all-keys-lost procedure, the system clears every previously enrolled key and only recognizes the ones programmed during that session. A stolen remote head key becomes useless for starting the van the moment that process completes. One thing to keep in mind on a van: the blade also works the door locks. If the stolen key is out there and someone knows the vehicle, rekeying the door cylinders is worth considering alongside the electronic erase.

Q: Does my 2016 Express remote head key have a hidden emergency blade inside?

No. The remote head key is a single integrated unit - the blade is permanently attached to the fob body. There's no release button, no insert blade, nothing hidden inside. What you see is what you get. This is different from a proximity smart key, where a separate emergency blade is often tucked inside the housing. If you've seen that style on another GM vehicle and expected the same thing here, that's the source of the confusion.

Q: My Express fob only unlocks the driver door on the first press. Is that a key problem or a van problem?

That's a van setting, not a key problem. Many GM full-size vans are configured so the first press of the unlock button releases only the driver door, and a second press unlocks the rest. It's a factory default that can be adjusted through the vehicle's personalization settings, depending on trim and configuration.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and bring it to you to program?

Yes, with one condition: the factory FCC ID on the fob has to match what's correct for your van. Bring the wrong fob and it won't pair, full stop. If you've already purchased one and want to confirm it's the right unit before paying for a programming visit, just call me and read me what's printed on the back. Takes thirty seconds to check. Buying the blank yourself can save some money on the part.

2016 Chevrolet Express Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near The Avenue in Ventura. He runs a small operation out of his 2016 Express and his only key had snapped off right where the blade meets the fob housing. Not in the ignition - just in his pocket, from metal fatigue. He was holding two pieces and asking if he was looking at a tow.

He was not looking at a tow.

The blade breaks on these at the neck sometimes, especially on a work van that gets yanked in and out of pockets a hundred times a week. The fob body itself was intact. I pulled up next to him, confirmed the fob electronics still fired, and got to work cutting a new key blade to his vehicle. Then I programmed the replacement remote head key on site through the OBD port.

The whole thing took about forty-five minutes in a parking lot off the main strip. He had one working key when I showed up and zero by the time I got there. He left with a fresh unit, tested on all the locks and the ignition.

He mentioned the dealer had told him to bring it in, leave it, and plan on the next day. I didn't bring up the price comparison. He did.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2016 Express?▼

Call a mobile locksmith and skip the tow. If you've lost every key to the van, the dealer wants you to flat-bed it to them, which adds cost before they've even touched it. We come to you. On the 2016 Express, an all-keys-lost job means cutting a new remote head key to the vehicle and programming it through the diagnostic port on site. The system wipes any previously enrolled keys and registers only what's present in the session.
