Your Lumina's Key System
Second Generation (W-Body)
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a small metal pellet embedded in the blade. That pellet is a resistor, and it is one of 15 possible values ranging from about 400 ohms (0.4K) to 11.8K ohms. If the resistance does not match what your ECM expects, the car will not start. No transponder chip, no computer programming. Just the right resistor value and a properly cut blade.
Which Key Does Your Lumina Use?
A standard metal key with a small resistor pellet visible on the blade. No buttons, no remote, no battery. The resistor value must match your car's ECM or the engine will not crank.
The Real Cost of a Lumina Key
Price includes mobile service, resistor value measurement, key cutting, and testing at your location.

Common Lumina Key Problems
Incorrect VATS Resistor Value
Key in, turn, nothing. No crank, just silence. The resistor pellet in your key blade must match one of 15 ohm values in your ECM. A replacement cut without measuring makes the car think it is stolen. We measure with a multimeter before cutting.
Worn Ignition Lock Cylinder
Owners assume the key is bad when the real problem is the cylinder. On high-mileage Luminas, wafers wear and the cylinder stops turning. We replace on-site with a compatible US161LT part and cut a fresh key in under an hour in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Lost All Keys, VATS Reset Needed
When every key is gone, the ECM still remembers a specific resistor value. We read it from the system to know which of 15 resistance levels your Lumina needs. We cut a matched VATS key or install a bypass if the original module failed. No tow needed.
Can You Program a Lumina Key Yourself?
You can program a keyless entry remote yourself using the trunk connector method. Ground the black/white wire in the passenger-side trunk area, and the doors will lock and unlock to confirm programming mode. Press a button on each remote to register it. The physical VATS key itself does not need programming, just the correct resistor value and a proper cut, which requires a locksmith with a multimeter and the right blanks.

Did You Know?
VATS, which stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System, was GM's first widespread passive immobilizer. It debuted in 1985 on the Corvette, using nothing more than a tiny resistor pellet embedded in the key blade to prevent theft. By the mid-1990s, GM had expanded the system across its lineup, including the Lumina, with 15 possible resistor values ranging from 0.5K to 11.8K ohms.
