First Generation (GMT355)
This is where security got serious, or rather, where it stayed simple. Your first gen Colorado uses a standard mechanical key with no transponder chip. No fancy electronics, no programming needed to start the engine. GM co-developed this truck with Isuzu on the GMT355 platform, and the key system reflects that era: straightforward metal key, optional remote fob for locks only.
Second Generation (RG)
GM stepped things up here with the transition to the RG platform. This short production window bridged the gap between the old mechanical setup and the more advanced security that came next. Key system details vary by trim and configuration, so we verify your exact setup before we roll out.
Third Generation (RG Redesigned)
This is where security got serious. The redesigned RG platform brought transponder chip technology and more advanced immobilizer integration. These Colorados require professional programming equipment to add or replace keys. No shortcuts, no DIY workarounds for the transponder side of things.
Fourth Generation (Current)
Full smart key with push-button start and a laser-cut emergency blade. Your 2023 or newer Colorado uses a CR2032 battery in the fob and requires server authentication for key programming. This is the most advanced key system Chevy has put in a Colorado, and we handle it on-site with the right tools and credentials.
Which Key Does Your Colorado Use?

First Generation Key Wear and Mechanical Failure
The GMT355 platform used a basic metal key with no chip, and the blade wears. Worn teeth mean the key slips or refuses to turn. We cut a fresh key on-site and address a degraded cylinder too, so you stop fighting your ignition in Oxnard traffic.
Body Control Module (BCM) Compatibility
First check on a 2004-2006 Colorado is which BCM your truck has. Cab config and regional packaging affect the part number, and a wrong assumption means a failed program. We read the BCM before touching anything, saving you time and parts swaps.
Immobilizer System Verification Required
Your Colorado will not start and you assume the key is dead. Across generations, the immobilizer type varies more than expected, and some locksmiths get tripped up. We verify your config with diagnostic tools first; guessing leads to wasted money.
Smart Key Battery Depletion (2023-2025)
Most owners think their 2023+ Colorado has a major electrical problem when really the CR2032 in the fob died. Most common call on this generation. Two-minute, $5 fix. If a fresh battery does not work, we dig deeper in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Can You Program a Colorado Key Yourself?
You can program the remote fob yourself using the door unlock method or the fuse method. Neither procedure programs a key to start the engine, because these trucks use a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip. The remote just handles lock and unlock.
No DIY option here. These models require professional programming equipment and potentially a PIN code. Call us and we handle it on-site.
Transponder programming requires professional tools like the SmartPro or Autel IM608 and either an existing working key or a PIN code. No DIY workaround exists for the engine start side. All keys lost situations require dealer-level computer access, which we carry on every call.
The current generation requires GM SPS server authentication for key programming. You cannot do this at home. We have the NASTF credentials and tools to handle it in your driveway.
