Out in the Wagon Wheel neighborhood in Oxnard, a woman had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions sitting on the back seat. Her 2013 Chevrolet Colorado wouldn't turn over in the parking lot. Cranked fine, but the engine wouldn't catch. The security light on the dash was solid, which on these trucks means the body control module isn't reading the PK3 transponder in the key.
It was about 7pm. Pharmacy closed at 9. She called the dealer first. Closed. Then she called me. I was about 20 minutes out.
I got there, plugged my IM608 into the OBD port under the dash, and pulled the BCM data. The transponder in her original key had gone intermittent. Probably took a hit or got wet at some point, and the resistive signal was drifting outside the window the BCM would accept. Classic PK3 behavior on these trucks.
I cut a new B111 blade to her locks, programmed a fresh PK3 transponder through the diagnostic port, and tested the start cycle three times cold. Then I walked her through the ten-minute Passlock relearn procedure, the one where you leave the key at ON until the security light goes out, just so she'd have it in her back pocket if something ever acted up again.
From her phone call to engine running was under 50 minutes. She made the pharmacy with time to spare.
