2010 Chevrolet Colorado Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman over in the Silver Strand neighborhood in Oxnard. She had a 2010 Colorado, crew cab, LT trim. Said it cranked but would not fire, and the security light on the dash was solid. Classic Passlock behavior.

She had already texted me the VIN before I left my last stop. That told me everything: Passlock II system, B-code key blank (Strattec 5911163, Ilco B111-PT), no transponder chip in the key itself. The security is all in the ignition cylinder and BCM. Her key was fine. The truck was the problem.

I pulled up, confirmed the Passlock sensor was throwing a fit by watching the security lamp cycle. The BCM needed a relearn. I connected my Tech2 scan tool to the DLC, accessed the BCM module, and ran the Passlock reset procedure. Without the scan tool, you are sitting through three 10-minute wait cycles with the key on, which is the manual method GM describes. With the right equipment, I cut that down considerably.

While the relearn ran, she told me she had been watching her dog chase seagulls at the beach when the truck decided to lock her out of starting. Dog was sitting in the passenger seat, calm as anything, like nothing happened.

Tested the start three times cold. Security light behaved. She was headed home before the marine layer rolled in.
