It depends on the year and model. Pre-1997 GMC trucks and SUVs use standard mechanical keys with no chip. Some mid-1980s through mid-1990s models used VATS, a resistor pellet in the key blade that acts as a basic theft deterrent. From 1997 onward, most GMCs use a PK3 transponder chip that must be programmed to the vehicle. The 2014 Sierra introduced the sidewinder laser-cut flip key alongside proximity push-to-start. From 2019 onward, most Sierra, Yukon, and Canyon models use a fully keyless proximity smart key. Tell us your year and model and we will confirm exactly what key you have.

VATS stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System. It uses a small resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. The ignition reads the resistance and disables the fuel and starter if it does not match. GMC used VATS on select trucks and SUVs from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. There are 15 possible resistance values and the key must match exactly. A key cut to the right profile but with the wrong or missing pellet will turn in the ignition but the engine will not crank. We measure the resistance and cut a matching key on site.

All-keys-lost means no working programmed key exists for the vehicle. For any 2005 and newer GMC with a PK3 Plus or proximity system, completing an all-keys-lost job requires a security PIN pulled from GM's Techline Connect server using your VIN and proof of ownership. Without that PIN, no tool can register a new key. We have Techline Connect access through our GM diagnostic tooling and handle most GMC all-keys-lost jobs on site for the Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, Terrain, and Canyon. One important note: from 2017 onward, if you still have one working key and want to add a spare, using two existing keys is the faster path. If you only have one key and trigger an all-keys-lost reset, all prior keys are erased and the full programming sequence must be completed.

Yes, for most GMC models. On 2003 through 2016 models, adding a spare key requires one working key and an OBD programmer in most cases. From 2017 onward, GM's quick-learn procedure requires two working keys to add a third without going through the full all-keys-lost PIN process. If you have one key and want a spare on a 2017 or newer model, we still handle it using the Techline Connect server PIN, but it takes longer than a standard add-key. Bring your existing key when you call so we can confirm the fastest path for your vehicle.

Start with the fob battery. Most GMC proximity fobs use a CR2032 and the Driver Information Center will show Key Fob Battery Low before the battery fully dies. If a fresh battery does not fix detection, check whether both fobs are failing. If both fobs fail simultaneously, a low vehicle battery is the most likely cause rather than two dead fob batteries at the same time. A vehicle battery below about 12 volts can prevent the keyless system from detecting fobs even when they are fully charged. If only one fob is failing and the vehicle battery is good, the fob may need a reprogramming step.

Press the small release button on the side of the fob and slide out the hidden mechanical blade. Use it to pry open the small cover on the driver's door handle and manually unlock the door. Once inside, place the dead fob in the transmitter pocket in the center console, typically between the cup holders. Press the brake firmly and push the start button. The vehicle reads the fob's passive transponder chip through the pocket's induction antenna without needing battery power. If the DIC shows No Remote Key Detected, it is prompting you to place the fob in the pocket, which is the correct step. Replace the CR2032 battery as soon as possible afterward.

Unfortunately, yes. GMC Sierra and Yukon models with keyless entry from 2010 through the present use low-frequency proximity signals that can be amplified by relay devices, allowing thieves to unlock and start the vehicle without the key ever leaving your home. A class-action lawsuit was filed against GM in June 2025 alleging the company knew about the vulnerability since at least 2022 and failed to address it. GM has not issued a recall or software patch as of early 2026. The most effective countermeasures are storing key fobs in a Faraday pouch overnight and adding a visible steering wheel lock, which relay thieves typically skip. We can also discuss aftermarket immobilizer options that require a separate PIN to start the vehicle.
