About GMC Keys

GMC key replacement overview in Ventura County

GMC trucks and SUVs run on GM's key platform from classic VATS resistor keys through PK3 transponders, sidewinder flip fobs, and current proximity smart keys. Whether you drive a Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, Canyon, or Terrain, we carry the parts and tools to program your key on site without a dealer appointment.

Every GMC Key Type, Cut and Programmed On Site

GMC

GMC introduced transponder chip keys across the Sierra and Yukon lineup starting in 1997, with PK3 encrypted chips becoming standard by the early 2000s. The 2014 Sierra was a turning point, bringing the high-security sidewinder laser-cut flip key and proximity push-to-start to the full-size truck lineup. From 2017 onward, most GMC models require two working keys to add a third without triggering a full all-keys-lost reset, and all-keys-lost situations on any 2005 and newer GMC require a security PIN pulled from GM's Techline Connect server via VIN.

GMC Sierra Key Replacement

GMC

The Sierra is the most common GMC we service and it has gone through more key system changes than most vehicles in the GM lineup. The C/K era trucks before 1997 used purely mechanical keys with no electronics. From 1997 through 2004, PK3 transponder chips became standard across the Sierra lineup, programmed via a Tech2 or basic OBD procedure. The GMT900 generation from 2007 through 2013 moved to PK3 Plus encryption and added integrated remote head keys across most trims, with the OUC60221 and OUC60270 FCC platforms covering most of these fobs.

GMC The 2014 Sidewinder Upgrade

The 2014 Sidewinder Upgrade

The K2XX generation in 2014 was the biggest key system change in decades: the high-security sidewinder laser-cut blade arrived along with proximity push-to-start and the beginning of the GM PIN requirement for all-keys-lost jobs. The current T1XX generation from 2019 onward uses a fully keyless proximity system with a transmitter pocket in the center console, requires a Techline Connect PIN for any all-keys-lost situation, and uses the M3N-32337100 smart key platform on most trims. From 2017 onward, the quick-learn add-key procedure requires two existing programmed keys.

GMC Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

GMC dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

GMC dealerships charge $330 to $550 for a smart key replacement and $500 to $1,000 or more for an all-keys-lost job that requires towing the vehicle in and a $100 to $150 diagnostic fee before any work begins. We handle most GMC key jobs on site at your location for significantly less, with no tow, no diagnostic fee, and no multi-day wait.

GMC Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

GMC Dead Key Fob Battery
Dead Key Fob Battery
The most common GMC key issue on every model. All GMC proximity fobs use a CR2032 battery and the Driver Information Center shows Key Fob Battery Low before total failure. Southern California heat accelerates drain on high-mileage construction and work trucks. If both fobs fail at the same time, the vehicle battery is likely the issue rather than two coincidentally dead fob batteries. No reprogramming is needed after a correct battery swap.
GMC Cracked Fob Shell on Sierra and Yukon
Cracked Fob Shell on Sierra and Yukon
GMC Sierra and Yukon fob shells crack from daily pocket carry and drops, particularly on 2014 through 2020 work trucks used in construction. Once the shell cracks, buttons become sticky or stop registering. The internal circuit board is usually undamaged and can be transferred to a new aftermarket shell without any reprogramming. We carry replacement shells and handle this on site.
GMC All-Keys-Lost PIN Required on 2005 and Newer Models
All-Keys-Lost PIN Required on 2005 and Newer Models
On any GMC from 2005 onward with a PK3 Plus or proximity system, all-keys-lost requires a security PIN from GM's Techline Connect server before any key can be programmed. Without this PIN, no programming tool can register a new key. Many locksmiths without Techline access cannot complete this job. We have active Techline Connect access and handle on-site all-keys-lost for Sierra, Yukon, Acadia, Terrain, and Canyon across all covered years.
GMC Relay Theft Vulnerability on 2010 and Newer Keyless Models
Relay Theft Vulnerability on 2010 and Newer Keyless Models
GMC Sierra and Yukon models with proximity keyless entry from 2010 through the present are vulnerable to relay attacks where thieves amplify the fob signal from inside your home to the truck outside. Theft can occur in under 30 seconds with no alarm triggered. A June 2025 class-action lawsuit alleges GM knew about this since 2022. Faraday pouches and visible steering wheel locks are the most practical current countermeasures.

Pro Tip

GMC pro tip

If you own a 2017 or newer GMC and currently have only one programmed key, get a spare made before you lose the one you have. Here is why this matters more for GMC than most other brands: from 2017 onward, GM's standard add-key procedure requires two working keys to add a third using the faster quick-learn method. If your single key is lost or damaged, you are looking at a full all-keys-lost job, which erases all prior keys, requires a Techline Connect PIN, takes significantly longer, and costs more than a simple add-key would have.

GMC The Real Cost of Waiting

The Real Cost of Waiting

The cost difference between adding a spare now versus doing an all-keys-lost later is substantial.

GMC Protecting Against Relay Theft

Protecting Against Relay Theft

On the relay theft side, if you own a 2010 or newer Sierra or Yukon with keyless entry, a Faraday signal-blocking pouch costs a few dollars and takes the relay attack off the table entirely. GM has not issued a software fix for the vulnerability as of early 2026, despite a class-action lawsuit filed in June 2025 specifically over this issue on Sierra and Yukon models. The pouch is the most practical protection available right now.

GMC Key Fob Battery Guide

GMC How to Open

How to Open

Press the small release button on the side of the fob and slide out the hidden mechanical blade first. Once the blade is removed, use a coin in the seam on the back of the fob to gently pry the two halves apart. The CR2032 battery sits inside with the positive side facing up. Snap the case back together firmly and reinsert the blade.
CR2032
GMC Battery Type

Battery Type

All GMC proximity fobs from 2014 onward use a CR2032. Make sure to remove the blade first before prying the case, as trying to open the fob with the blade still seated can crack the housing. Clean dry hands matter more than most people realize when handling the new battery, as skin oils can corrode the contacts over time and cause earlier failure. On 2017 through 2019 Acadia fobs, the housing seam can crack if pried with a metal tool, so a plastic trim tool or a thick coin is the right approach. No reprogramming is needed after any battery swap on GMC proximity fobs.

GMC Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
