How GMC Safari Key Security Evolved
VATS Resistor Key Era
Security on these early Safaris is analog, not digital. Your key has a tiny resistor pellet embedded in the blade, and the ignition reads its resistance value to decide whether to start. There are 15 possible resistance values, so we measure the one in your column before cutting anything. Simple system, but it still stops the van cold when the pellet wears down or the contacts corrode.
Passlock I Transition
This is where GM moved away from the resistor pellet and into sensor territory. Your 1999 to 2001 Safari uses Passlock I, which reads a Hall effect sensor inside the lock cylinder instead of a chip in the key. The key itself uses a Texas 33 (ID33) transponder signal paired with on-board programming. It is more reliable than VATS when it works, but the cylinder sensor is a known failure point on high-mileage vans.
Optional Keyless Entry Remote
Higher trim Safaris came with a three-button remote head key for lock, unlock, and panic. If your Safari is 1999 or newer, that remote head also carries a Texas 33 transponder chip. The remote runs on a CR2032 battery and does not tie into the immobilizer directly, so a dead fob battery will not stop you from starting the van.
Which Key Does Your Safari Use?
A plain metal key with a small resistor pellet visible in the blade. No buttons, no battery. The pellet is the security system.
Looks like a regular key with a plastic head, but there is a Texas 33 chip inside that talks to the Passlock system. No remote buttons on this one.
A key with lock, unlock, and panic buttons built into the head. If your Safari is 1999 or later, it also has a transponder chip inside. Uses a CR2032 coin battery for the remote.
Pricing by Generation
All prices include mobile service to your location, key cutting, programming or VATS matching, and testing before we leave.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
We carry the same GM-compatible diagnostic tools the dealer uses. We just bring them to your driveway for about half the price.
Common GMC Safari Key Problems
VATS Failure: Security Light Flashing
The resistor pellet in the key blade is the culprit. Tiny contacts in the ignition cylinder wear or corrode, and the system can no longer read correct resistance. Security light flashes, van won't start. We measure with an ohmmeter and install a bypass.
Passlock Cylinder Sensor Failure
Before replacing anything, we check voltage signal from lock cylinder sensor. On 1999-2001 Safaris this sensor sends resistance to the BCM; when it drifts, the theft deterrent kicks in. a 10-minute relearn fixes it. Truly shot? We bypass on-site in Oxnard.
Lost VATS Key With No Spare
Security light on, van won't start, no working key. Worst-case VATS Safari scenario. We read the black resistor value directly from the ignition column with an ohmmeter, then cut a new key with the matching pellet. No tow needed.
Remote Head Key Button Failure
People think the remote is dead when buttons stop responding, but the real problem is the rubber pad underneath. It degrades and stops contacting the circuit board. Good news: immobilizer is separate from the remote, so the van starts. We replace the shell.
Can You Program a Safari Key Yourself?
The Safari does not use a traditional transponder chip system that supports self-programming. VATS keys need the correct resistor value matched, and Passlock keys need on-board relearn procedures or scan tool access. You need a locksmith for both.
You can program keyless entry remotes yourself using the GM door unlock procedure. Close all doors, insert the key without turning, hold the power unlock button on the driver door, cycle the ignition on and off three times, then release. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm programming mode. This only programs the remote buttons; it does not affect the ignition key or immobilizer.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the GMC Safari shared its GMT120 platform with the Chevrolet Astro, making it one of the last body-on-frame minivans sold in America. The entire segment eventually shifted to unibody construction for better ride quality and fuel economy, but the Safari and Astro held on with their truck-based bones through 2005. That rear-wheel-drive layout and available all-wheel-drive made them surprisingly capable tow vehicles for their size.
