2001 GMC Safari Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy near the Carnegie Art Museum area in Oxnard. He runs hiking groups and had parked his 2001 GMC Safari in a lot before heading out. Came back, no key. Gone. Probably sitting on a rock somewhere up the trail.

He had already called another locksmith who told him the ignition would need to be drilled out and replaced. That was going to get expensive fast.

I drove out and used a B111 Lishi tool to decode his door lock, reading each wafer position inside the cylinder without removing or damaging anything. That gave me the exact bitting for a new key. Cut the blade on site, clean and quick.

Here is where the Safari is different from a lot of modern trucks. There is no transponder chip in the key. The 2001 Safari runs GM Passlock II, which means the security code lives in the ignition cylinder's internal sensor, not in the key itself. So once I had a correctly cut blade, I performed a Passlock relearn: key to ON, wait for the security light to stop flashing (about ten minutes per cycle, three cycles total, roughly 30 minutes of sitting there). After the third cycle the BCM accepted the new key's resistive signature.

Then I paired his KOBUT1BT remote to the body control module so all four buttons worked: lock, unlock, panic, and rear hatch. His original locks stayed intact. No drill, no new cylinder, no tow to a dealer. Just a new key that works exactly like the one sitting on a rock somewhere.
