About Toyota Keys

Toyota key replacement overview in Ventura County

Toyota has been one of the most common vehicles in Southern California for decades, and the Camry, Corolla, RAV4, Tacoma, and 4Runner cover the full range from basic ID46 transponder keys to encrypted G-chip smart keys requiring a Toyota seed-key PIN to program. We carry the parts and tools to handle every generation on site at your location.

Every Toyota Key Type, Programmed On Site Without a Dealer Appointment

Toyota

Toyota introduced transponder chip keys in 1997 on the Camry and 1998 across most of the rest of the lineup, with the ID46 chip becoming the standard platform through the mid-2000s. Remote head keys arrived on the Camry and 4Runner in the early 2000s, and flip fobs followed in 2004.

Toyota The Smart Key System Era

The Smart Key System Era

Proximity push-to-start, which Toyota calls the Smart Key System, rolled out model by model starting with premium models around 2007 and reaching the Camry in 2012, Corolla in 2014, Tacoma in 2016, and Tundra by 2022. The 2010 and newer models use Toyota's G-chip encrypted transponder, which requires a seed-key PIN obtained from Toyota's server to program any new key, including all-keys-lost situations.

How We Handle Toyota G-Chip Keys

We access that PIN through our Toyota Techstream setup and Autel tooling, handle the full programming sequence on site, and get you moving without a tow or a dealer appointment.

Toyota Camry Key Replacement

Toyota

The Camry is one of the most common vehicles we service in Southern California and it covers more key system generations than almost any other Toyota model.

Toyota Camry Transponder Generations

Camry Transponder Generations

The fourth-generation Camry from 1997 through 2001 introduced Toyota's first transponder, an early chip that required on-board programming or an OBD jumper procedure and had no rolling code encryption. The XV30 and XV40 generations from 2002 through 2011 moved to the 4D chip with encrypted transponders, remote head keys, and optional flip fobs using the GQ43VT20T platform.

Toyota Smart Key Era Camry

Smart Key Era Camry

The XV50 generation starting in 2012 introduced the Smart Key System with push-to-start on higher trims, using a 4D67 chip and the TQ3T-FOB8B51 smart key platform. The XV70 generation from 2018 onward is fully Smart Key across most trims and uses G-chip encryption with a server-retrieved seed-key PIN required for all programming. The 2025 and 2026 Camry continues on this platform.

Toyota Common Camry FCC IDs

Common Camry FCC IDs

HYQ12BAC and HYQ14FBA are the most common FCC IDs across the middle generations. Tell us your year and trim and we will confirm exactly what key you have and what programming it requires.

Toyota Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Toyota dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Toyota dealerships charge $330 to $1,000 for a smart key replacement and $500 to $1,000 or more for an all-keys-lost job that typically requires towing the vehicle in and paying a $100 to $150 diagnostic fee before any work starts. One Corolla owner was quoted close to $1,000 for an all-keys-lost job at the dealer. We handle most Toyota key jobs on site at your location for significantly less, with no tow and no diagnostic fee.

Toyota Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Toyota Dead or Weak Fob Battery
Dead or Weak Fob Battery
The most common Toyota key issue across every model. Most Toyota Smart Key fobs use a CR2032 battery, though some compact hybrid fobs use a CR1632 or CR2025. The dashboard displays Key Not Detected or prompts you to touch the engine switch with the key fob when the battery is low. A fresh battery takes under two minutes and requires no reprogramming. If detection does not restore after a correct battery swap, a sync reset via OBD is the next step.
Toyota G-Chip Seed-Key Required for Programming
G-Chip Seed-Key Required for Programming
On 2010 and newer Toyotas with the G-chip encrypted transponder, a seed-key PIN must be retrieved from Toyota's server before any new key can be programmed, including all-keys-lost situations. Without this PIN, no programming tool can add a key to the vehicle. This catches many locksmiths off guard. We have Techstream access and Autel IM608 tooling that retrieves the PIN on site for most 2010 through 2022 models, allowing us to complete the job without a dealer visit.
Toyota Smart Key Not Detected in Urban Areas
Smart Key Not Detected in Urban Areas
Toyota Smart Key systems are susceptible to RF interference from power lines, cell towers, and electronics inside the vehicle such as phone chargers and GPS units. In dense urban areas across Southern California, this can cause intermittent Key Not Detected warnings or push-start failures even with a fully charged fob. The vehicle reads the correct key once you move away from the interference source. If the issue persists, we test whether the fob itself, the receiver, or the vehicle battery is the actual cause.
Toyota DST80 Immobilizer Vulnerability on Pre-2020 Models
DST80 Immobilizer Vulnerability on Pre-2020 Models
Researchers have documented a flaw in the DST80 transponder encryption used on Toyota Camry, Corolla, and RAV4 models from roughly 2007 through 2019. The implementation uses low-randomness cryptographic keys that can be extracted with a Proxmark RFID reader, allowing the immobilizer to be cloned and bypassed. Toyota has acknowledged this affects older models and states current production uses different configurations. Owners of affected vehicles in high-theft areas should consider an aftermarket secondary immobilizer as an additional deterrent.

How Toyota Keys Have Changed Over the Years

Toyota Standard Mechanical Key (Pre-1998)
Pre-1998
Standard Mechanical Key
All Toyota models including Camry, Corolla, RAV4, and Tacoma used purely mechanical keys with no chip and no immobilizer. Any correctly cut blank would start the vehicle. Remote keyless entry fobs began appearing on some models in the mid-1990s but operated independently for door locks only.
Toyota Early Transponder Key (ID46 and ID33) (1997 to 2004)
1997 to 2004
Early Transponder Key (ID46 and ID33)
Toyota introduced the Engine Immobilizer starting with the 1997 Camry and 1998 Corolla and RAV4. The chip communicates with an electromagnetic coil ring around the ignition barrel. Early chips from this era could be programmed using an OBD jumper procedure on the diagnostic port or a basic add-key sequence with two working keys. All-keys-lost required ECU removal or a jumper reset sequence.
Toyota 4D Encrypted Transponder (2004 to 2009)
2004 to 2009
4D Encrypted Transponder
The 4D chip series, including the 4D67 used on Camry and 4D-series variants on RAV4 and Tacoma, added rolling code encryption that resisted cloning. This generation standardized the OBD-II programming approach using Toyota Techstream and a PIN for all-keys-lost. Remote head keys became widespread and flip fobs appeared on Camry starting in 2004.
Toyota G-Chip Encrypted Smart Key (2010 to 2018)
2010 to 2018
G-Chip Encrypted Smart Key
Toyota's G-chip uses a more complex challenge-response encryption system that requires a seed-key PIN retrieved from Toyota's server to program any new key. This generation also brought full proximity push-to-start across the mainstream lineup, with the Smart Key System becoming standard on Camry in 2012, Corolla in 2014, and Tacoma in 2016. The HYQ12BBY and HYQ14FBA platforms cover most of this era.
Toyota Enhanced G-Chip Smart Key (2019 to Present)
2019 to Present
Enhanced G-Chip Smart Key
Current Toyota Smart Key fobs retain the G-chip architecture with enhanced server-based authentication. The 2022 and newer Tundra and 2022 and newer Prius Prime use next-generation encrypted systems where some all-keys-lost situations may require dealer server access. Motion-sensing fob technology has begun appearing on 2026 international models and is expected to roll out to US-market vehicles in the coming years.

Security Notice for Toyota Owners

Toyota security note

Toyota owners should know about two separate security vulnerabilities that affect a significant portion of the brand's vehicles on Southern California roads.

Toyota The DST80 Chip Vulnerability

The DST80 Chip Vulnerability

The first is a documented flaw in the DST80 transponder chip used on Camry, Corolla, and RAV4 models from roughly 2007 through 2019. Researchers demonstrated that the encryption implementation uses low-randomness cryptographic keys that can be extracted using an RFID reader called a Proxmark, allowing the immobilizer to be bypassed entirely. Toyota has acknowledged the issue but states that current production vehicles use different configurations, leaving hundreds of thousands of older vehicles without a patch or retrofit.

Toyota CAN Bus Injection Attacks

CAN Bus Injection Attacks

The second vulnerability involves the CAN bus communication system on certain Toyota models, where thieves can plug a device into the vehicle's OBD port or headlight wiring harness to inject fake messages that bypass the immobilizer and allow the vehicle to start without any key at all. This attack has been used in vehicle thefts in multiple countries and has prompted Toyota to add CAN bus encryption to newer Land Cruiser and Hilux models.

Toyota How To Protect Your Toyota

How To Protect Your Toyota

For owners of affected older vehicles, the most effective countermeasures are a secondary aftermarket immobilizer that requires a separate PIN to start the vehicle, combined with storing key fobs in a Faraday pouch overnight to block relay amplification. A visible steering wheel lock adds a deterrence layer that relay thieves typically skip. If you drive a pre-2020 Camry, Corolla, or RAV4 and park regularly in high-traffic urban areas, these steps are worth taking seriously.

Toyota Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
