How Highlander Keys Changed Over 25 Years
First Generation (XU20/MCU20)
No security to worry about here. Your first gen Highlander uses a plain mechanical key with no transponder chip and no remote entry from the factory. You lose it, we cut a new one on the spot. Simple, fast, and cheap.
Second Generation (XU40)
This is where security got serious. Toyota added a transponder chip (Toyota 4D-67 / DST40) inside a laser-cut remote head key with three buttons and a CR2032 battery. The key has to talk to your Highlander's immobilizer before the engine will start, so programming is required every time.
Third Generation (XU50)
Push-button start arrived with this generation. Your Highlander uses a proximity smart key fob with a Toyota H chip or Texas 4D chip, three buttons, and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. You walk up, the doors unlock, and you press a button to start. The blade is there as a backup if the fob battery dies.
Fourth Generation (XU70)
Same smart key concept as the third gen, refined. Your XU70 Highlander still uses a Toyota H chip or Texas 4D chip, CR2032 battery, and three-button proximity fob with a laser-cut emergency blade. Hybrid models use the identical key system, so there is no difference in service.
Fifth Generation (XU80)
The newest Highlander continues the smart key platform with a CR2032 battery, laser-cut blade, and three-button fob. Toyota may have enhanced the security protocols on this generation, so we verify your exact specs before rolling out. On-board programming keeps this one doable in your driveway.
Which Key Does Your Highlander Use?
A plain metal key with no chip and no remote. If you can get a copy made at a hardware store, you are good. No programming needed.
A chunky key with three buttons on the head and a chip inside that talks to your immobilizer. It has to be laser-cut and programmed to your specific Highlander or the engine will not start.
A proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your Highlander detects it when you grab the door handle and lets you start with a push button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for dead battery situations.
Same proximity smart key concept as the third gen. Three buttons, CR2032 battery, and a laser-cut emergency blade hidden inside the fob. Hybrid and gas models use the same key.
The latest generation smart key. Three buttons, proximity entry, push-button start, and a hidden emergency blade. Exact chip specs may vary, so we verify before your appointment.

Common Highlander Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Depletion
The CR2032 in your 2014+ Highlander fob drains faster than expected. Toyota has TSBs for erroneous low-battery warnings from dirty contacts. Pop the fob open, clean contacts, drop in a fresh CR2032. If problems return, call (805) 790-8162.
Transponder Key Programming Failures
We check the key blank first. Non-OEM blanks with the wrong chip are the number one reason programming fails on 2008-2019 Highlanders. If a cheap Amazon key did not take, the blank is the problem. We carry verified blanks and run Techstream the right way.
Immobilizer System Lockouts
Your Highlander cranks but will not start, security light blinking. Rare, but we see it on high-mileage 2008-2015 cars where the transponder signal weakens or the antenna ring around the ignition starts failing. We re-register keys and test the antenna on-site.
Laser-Cut Blade Wear and Binding
9/10 it is the key blade, not the cylinder. Laser-cut blades on 2008+ Highlanders develop micro-wear after 8-10 years. Key sticks or feels gritty. A fresh-cut blade solves it. We cut on-site and transfer your chip and remote, no full replacement.
Can You Program a Highlander Key Yourself?
No transponder, no programming needed. These are plain mechanical keys. Get one cut at any locksmith or even a hardware store.
Yes, if you still have a working master key. There is a specific sequence: insert and remove the master key four times, cycle the driver door six times, then insert the new key. Timing is critical and you need the correct 4D-67 chip blank. If you mess up the sequence or use the wrong blank, it will not work. We can do it for you in about 15 minutes if you would rather not risk it.
No DIY option here. These require a diagnostic tool like Techstream or an Autel IM608 to register a new transponder key. Call us and we will handle it on-site.
Smart key systems with advanced immobilizers cannot be self-programmed. You need professional tools and the correct programming sequence. We carry everything needed on the truck and program these in your driveway anywhere from Oxnard to Simi Valley.

Did You Know?
Back in 2005, Toyota did something unusual with the Highlander. The second generation became the first Toyota SUV ever offered with a hybrid powertrain, making it a genuine pioneer in the hybrid SUV segment. That move influenced the entire industry's shift toward electrified larger vehicles, years before most competitors even had a hybrid crossover on the drawing board.
