A guy up in Upper Ojai called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had one working smart key for his 2016 Highlander and wanted a spare before he lost the only one he had. His words were something like, "I called the dealer and I think they quoted me wrong, because the number didn't make sense." It wasn't wrong. That's just what the dealer charges.
He met me in the parking area outside his building. I pulled the VIN, confirmed the key specs, and decoded his door lock cylinder to get the blade cut right without using his existing key as a copy. Cut the emergency insert blade first, tested it in the door and the ignition cylinder, then moved to the fob programming through the OBD port. The whole thing took about 35 minutes. The 4-button fob paired on the first attempt, touch unlock on both front handles worked, and I walked every button before I handed it over.
He stood there watching the whole job on the hood of his car in the afternoon sun. At the end he said the dealer had also told him he'd need to leave the car there for a day because they'd have to order the key. I was done before he would have even gotten a loaner sorted.
The dealer comparison wasn't even the point of the call for him. He just wanted a spare key. But the price difference and the fact that I came to him made it an easy decision in hindsight.
