How Toyota Built the FJ Cruiser Key System
1st Generation (Early)
Toyota kept things straightforward here with a 3-button remote head key on the GSJ10/15 platform. Your key has a standard blade, a CR2032 battery, and a transponder chip that talks to the Toyota Immobilizer system. On-board programming works for the remote functions, which means adding a spare is relatively quick.
1st Generation (Mid)
Not much changed from the earlier models. You still get a 3-button remote head key with the same standard blade and CR2032 battery. The Toyota Immobilizer carries over, and on-board programming still handles remote pairing. Mechanically and electronically, these are very close to the 2007-2008 setup.
1st Generation (Late)
Here is where Toyota added a fourth button to the remote head key. The standard blade and CR2032 battery stayed the same, but the extra button gave you more control. The Toyota Immobilizer system continued, and OEM remotes are strongly recommended for these years because aftermarket units tend to fail early.
1st Generation (Final)
The last FJ Cruisers rolled off the line with the same 4-button remote head key and standard blade. No push-button start was ever added to the FJ, so you are still working with a traditional keyed ignition. The Toyota Immobilizer handles security, and these final years are fully supported with our on-site tools.
Which Key Does Your FJ Cruiser Use?
A chunky black fob with a metal blade built right in. Three buttons: lock, unlock, and panic. This is the key that both starts your engine and controls your locks.
Same style as the earlier key but with a fourth button added. Standard blade, same CR2032 battery. If your fob looks like a slightly bigger version of the 2007 key, this is the one.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing, all done at your location.

Common FJ Cruiser Key Problems
Aftermarket Remote Failure
Cheap aftermarket remotes are the number one cause of FJ Cruiser key headaches. $20 Amazon fobs work a few months, then buttons get mushy or signal drops. OEM Toyota remotes last years, and the price gap is smaller than people expect.
VIP Security System Sensitivity
Your 2007 FJ alarm keeps tripping, at night or in parking garages. The VIP (RS3200+) security system on Convenience Package models had a glass-breakage mic never calibrated. A Security Off switch disables it; we adjust on-site in Simi Valley or Oxnard.
Programming Mode Exit Issues
If you did not open the driver's door at the very end of the sequence, the FJ never exits programming mode and nothing saves. Miss the 40-second window on any step and the process resets. We see this constantly with 2007-2008 owners in Thousand Oaks who tried it themselves.
Can You Program It Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself using a door and ignition sequence. But the transponder chip that actually starts the engine needs professional programming. So you can pair a new fob to your locks at home, but you still need us to make the key start the truck.
Same deal as the earlier years. The remote functions can be self-programmed with the right sequence, but the immobilizer chip requires professional tools. If you are adding a spare and already have a working key, the remote pairing is doable at home. For the transponder, call us.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 2007 FJ Cruiser with the Convenience Package came with a VIP (RS3200+) security system that was so sensitive, Toyota had to include a dedicated Security Off switch. The glass breakage microphone would trigger the alarm from vibrations, loud music, even heavy rain. It became one of the most talked about quirks in FJ Cruiser forums and a rite of passage for new owners figuring out why their alarm kept going off at 3 AM.
