How Toyota Built the FJ Cruiser Key System

1st Generation (Early)

2007-2008

Toyota kept things straightforward here with a 3-button remote head key on the GSJ10/15 platform. Your key has a standard blade, a CR2032 battery, and a transponder chip that talks to the Toyota Immobilizer system. On-board programming works for the remote functions, which means adding a spare is relatively quick.

1st Generation (Mid)

2009-2010

Not much changed from the earlier models. You still get a 3-button remote head key with the same standard blade and CR2032 battery. The Toyota Immobilizer carries over, and on-board programming still handles remote pairing. Mechanically and electronically, these are very close to the 2007-2008 setup.

1st Generation (Late)

2011-2012

Here is where Toyota added a fourth button to the remote head key. The standard blade and CR2032 battery stayed the same, but the extra button gave you more control. The Toyota Immobilizer system continued, and OEM remotes are strongly recommended for these years because aftermarket units tend to fail early.

1st Generation (Final)

2013-2014

The last FJ Cruisers rolled off the line with the same 4-button remote head key and standard blade. Can I program a new key fob myself for my 2009 FJ Cruiser? ▼

Grab your existing key and try this first. For 2007-2010 FJ Cruisers, you can self-program the remote lock and unlock functions using a specific door and ignition sequence: open the driver's door, insert and remove the key twice, open and close the door twice, then follow the remaining steps to put it in programming mode. You can register up to 4 remotes this way. But here is the catch: the transponder chip that actually lets the key start the engine needs professional programming. What if my 2012 FJ Cruiser fob battery dies off-road? ▼

No problem with starting. The FJ Cruiser remote head key has its mechanical blade right on the head, and the transponder chip works even with a dead fob battery. You will lose the remote lock/unlock buttons until you swap the CR2032, but the blade still unlocks the door and starts the engine. If you have a spare CR2032 in your glove box (and you should, they cost about $3), swap it in and your remote functions come right back. Does the 2014 FJ Cruiser have push-button start? ▼

No. Toyota never put push-button start in any FJ Cruiser, 2007 through 2014. Every single model year uses a traditional keyed ignition with a remote head key. The Toyota Immobilizer handles security through the transponder chip in your key, so you still need a properly programmed key to start the engine. Why won't my aftermarket fob work on my 2011 FJ Cruiser? ▼

Check whether it starts the engine or just does not work at all, because those are two different problems. If the remote buttons do not lock or unlock, the fob's frequency might not match your FJ (it needs to be the correct frequency for the US market). If the buttons work but the key will not start the truck, the transponder chip has not been programmed to your immobilizer. The 2011 and later models need locksmith tools for chip pairing; the DIY sequence only handles remote functions.
