How Toyota Yaris Keys Changed Over the Years
XP90: Transponder Key Era
You turn this key in the ignition like any other key, but there is a hidden Toyota 4D-67 transponder chip inside the plastic head that talks to your car's immobilizer every time you start it. No chip match, no start. The good news is this generation supports on-board programming, which means we can add keys using a door and ignition sequence without plugging into anything.
XP130: Remote Head Key
Toyota combined the remote buttons and the transponder chip into one unit for this generation. Your key still has a Toyota 4D-67 (DST40) and a standard blade, but programming now requires OBD-II access, meaning we plug our diagnostic tools into the port under your dash. Still straightforward for us, and we handle it right in your driveway in Simi Valley or wherever you are.
Transition Years: Verify by VIN
These years overlap between the XP90 and XP130 platforms. Some 2012 and 2013 models still use the older transponder key, while others got the updated remote head key with OBD-II programming. We verify by VIN before we roll out so we bring the right blank and the right approach.
Mazda2-based: Smart Key and Push-Button Start
Here is where things changed significantly. Toyota moved the Yaris to a Mazda2-based platform with a proximity smart key (FCC ID WAZSKE13D02), push-button start, and a high-security blade. This generation requires dealer-level server access for programming. We will tell you that upfront and point you in the right direction rather than waste your time.
Which Key Does Your Yaris Use?
A traditional metal key with a chunky plastic head. The transponder chip is hidden inside the grip. You insert it and turn it to start, just like the old days.
Lock, unlock, and panic buttons built right into the key head. One piece does everything: unlocks the doors remotely and starts the car when you turn it in the ignition.
A fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the button, and go. The emergency blade tucked inside is a high-security cut, different from the older Yaris keys.
Looks identical to the standard 2012-2018 remote head key. The catch is that some early models in this range may use the older platform. We verify by VIN before we come out.

Common Toyota Yaris Key Problems
Transponder Programming Failure
On-board programming fails when the ECU already has its maximum key codes stored, or when the aftermarket blank has the wrong chip. We reset the ECU and start fresh with a verified Toyota 4D-67 blank, which solves it on the spot.
Key Blade Cracking
The real problem is the plastic housing cracking at the transponder area, incredibly common on 2007-2013 Yaris keys. Buttons stop working or the blade feels loose. We transplant original chip into a fresh-cut shell so you do not need a full reprogramming.
Smart Key Battery Drain
On 2019-2020 smart key models, first we check whether the fob is actually being recognized. Sometimes the battery drains fast because the key and car are not communicating properly. A quick diagnostic tells us if it is a CR2032 swap or a programming issue.
FCC Mismatch on Replacement Remotes
Toyota used multiple FCC IDs across Yaris years, and remotes that look identical can be incompatible. Always match the FCC ID and part number to your specific year. Unsure? Call (805) 790-8162 and we look it up.
Can You Program a Yaris Key Yourself?
You can program the remote lock and unlock functions yourself using a door and ignition sequence. No tools needed. However, the transponder chip that actually lets the car start cannot be self-programmed on the Yaris. For that, you need professional equipment.
No DIY option here. Both the remote functions and the transponder require OBD-II diagnostic equipment to program. We handle this on-site with our Autel IM608 or VVDI Key Tool Plus.
The smart key system on these years requires dealer-level server access for programming. We cannot do this one on-site, and we will tell you that before we roll out so you are not paying for a wasted trip.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 2020 Toyota Yaris is not really a Toyota under the skin. Toyota moved it to the Mazda2 platform (Mazda2-based), which means it shares its key system, its high-security blade design, and even its FCC ID (WAZSKE13D02) with the Mazda2. The KDY3 emergency blade is a Mazda part number living inside a Toyota fob.
