2016 Toyota Yaris
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a smart key?

A remote head key is one physical unit: the key blade and the fob buttons are built into the same housing. Your 2016 Yaris uses this setup. You still insert it into the ignition cylinder and turn it to start the car. The transponder chip inside communicates with the immobilizer when you turn the key, and the three buttons handle your remote lock and unlock functions separately. A smart key is a different system entirely.

Q: How does dealer pricing compare to using a mobile locksmith for this key?

Toyota dealers typically break the job into parts cost, cutting, and programming labor, and then sometimes add a diagnostic fee on top. Owners of similar-era Toyotas regularly report total dealer quotes that leave them searching for alternatives. A mobile locksmith handles the same job with professional equipment. Same programmed key, same test before I leave, no appointment needed, and I come to you in Ventura. You save a good chunk, and you don't have to tow the car anywhere.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 Yaris. Can I program it myself?

Not on this one. The 2016 Yaris remote head key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register the transponder chip to the vehicle. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works for this key type. If you bought the fob and blade blank online, you've got the hardware but you still need someone with the right tools to complete the programming.

Q: My 2016 Yaris starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the battery. The fob on this car uses a CR2016, and when it gets weak the remote range drops fast before it dies completely. A lot of people swap in a CR2032 because it looks almost identical, but it's slightly thicker and can sit loose against the contacts, which causes intermittent remote failure even with a fresh cell. Confirm you have the correct CR2016 seated flat and the contact plate isn't bent.

2016 Toyota Yaris Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy on the shoulder of the 101 near Poinsettia in Ventura had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2016 Toyota Yaris. Clean break. Half the blade still seated in the cylinder, half in his hand. He'd already called one locksmith who quoted him for a full ignition replacement over the phone, sight unseen, which included drilling.

I carry extraction tools that fit Toyota's ignition keyway. The fragment came out without touching the wafers inside. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock from the wafer positions and cut a fresh blade to match.

The remote head key on this car is one piece, so the blade and fob body are integrated. His original fob was undamaged since only the blade had snapped. I transferred the working fob components and programmed the new key through the OBD port. No cylinder swap. No drilling. His original lock worked with the new key exactly as it had before.

When I told him what the other locksmith's plan would have cost, he just looked at the intact ignition and shook his head. Non-destructive extraction is always the first move. Drilling is a last resort, not a default quote.

Toyota Yaris Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Toyota key replacement so expensive?▼

It's a few things stacked on top of each other. The remote head key on your 2016 Yaris isn't just a metal blade. It has a transponder chip that has to be registered to your specific vehicle, plus the remote functions that need to be paired separately. The key blank itself costs more than a generic key, programming requires professional diagnostic equipment, and dealers build in labor and overhead on top of all that.
