I was parked near the water at Surfers Point when the call came in, maybe ten at night. Guy had his only key for a 2012 Yaris, and the fob had stopped working entirely. He'd already done the usual: new battery, rubbing the contacts, clicking it at the car from different angles. Nothing. When I got there, the key blade itself was fine. The fob body had a small crack along the seam near one of the buttons, just enough to let the battery shift under pressure. He'd been gripping it hard every time he clicked, which made the contact intermittent. Sometimes it worked for a second, then nothing.
I had the right shell and the hardware to sort it out. Got everything back together, tested all three buttons at range, confirmed the blade turned in the ignition the way it should.
He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him the last time he asked about a replacement. The number he said was more than I would have charged him for a full all-keys-lost job. He didn't need any of that. Just a guy near Surfers Point who needed his one key put back together, done on site, for a fraction of what he'd been quoted somewhere else.
