Near Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks, a guy was sitting on the curb next to his 2009 Yaris with half a key blade in his hand and the other half jammed in the ignition cylinder.
He had already called another locksmith who quoted him for a full ignition replacement. Drilling out the cylinder, new lock assembly, new keys, the works. He said the word "drilling" made him hang up and keep looking.
I got there and used my TOY43AT Lishi to work around the broken fragment inside the cylinder. The TOY43 keyway on these Yaris models has eight wafer positions, and the blade had snapped right around wafer five. Took some patience, but the fragment came out clean. No wafer damage, no scoring on the cylinder walls.
While I had the Lishi in there, I decoded all eight wafer depths from the lock itself. Cut a fresh TOY43 blade on the van, seated a new 4D-67 transponder chip in the key head, and ran the registration through OBD using the car's own immobilizer ECU, part number 89780-52110 on these second-gen Yaris sedans.
He turned the key and it fired right up. Looked at the ignition like he expected it to fight back. It did not.
His original lock cylinder stayed in place. His GQ43VT14T remote still worked. The whole thing cost him a fraction of what that other shop had planned with the drill-and-replace route.
