A guy at San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura lost his only key somewhere between the sand and the parking area. Looked for close to an hour, checked with the lifeguard station, retraced every step. Nothing. His 2018 Yaris was sitting in the lot with no way to open it.
He had already called the Toyota dealer and they told him the car would need to be towed in, the part would need to be ordered, and he was looking at days before he could drive again. He was still standing in the lot when he called me.
I started with my Lishi tool to pick and decode the door lock, reading each wafer position to get exact cut depths without needing the original blade. The Yaris sedan uses a Mazda-style keyway on these rebadged models, so knowing that ahead of time matters.
Once I had the mechanical side done, I connected through the OBD port and ran the immobilizer reset. On this platform the security module is Mazda-derived, so the registration protocol is different from a standard Toyota H-chip process. Cleared the old key data, registered the new WAZSKE13D01 proximity fob, all four buttons including trunk release.
He stood there watching the whole time, arms crossed, not saying a word. When the engine turned over he just nodded and said "that's it?" Like he expected something harder.
The whole job, lock decode to engine running, took about 50 minutes in the same beach parking lot.
