Toyota 86 Key Systems by Generation
ZN6 Smart Key (Push-to-Start Trims)
This is where Toyota's security got serious on the 86. High, Special Edition, and TRD trims use a 4-button smart proximity key (FCC: HYQ14AHP) with push-button start. Programming requires Toyota Techstream via OBD-II, and there is no shortcut around it. The system registers both the immobilizer key code and a separate wireless code, so both have to be done right.
ZN6 Base (Key Start)
This is where security stays moderate but still requires professional tools. Base model 86s use a 3-button transponder key with a traditional ignition cylinder. You turn the key like normal, but the immobilizer chip inside has to match the ECU or the engine will not start. OBD-II programming with Techstream is the only way to register a new one.
Which Key Does Your Toyota 86 Use?
This is the push-button start fob. Four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry if the battery dies.
This is the traditional key you insert into the ignition. Three buttons on the head for lock, unlock, and panic. The transponder chip inside communicates with your immobilizer every time you start the car.

Can You Program a Toyota 86 Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for any 2017 to 2019 Toyota 86. Every key, whether smart or transponder, requires Toyota Techstream software connected via OBD-II. You need professional equipment for this one.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Toyota 86 shares its platform and boxer engine with the Subaru BRZ. They were co-developed from the ground up. Despite the shared bones, Toyota insisted on using its own proprietary D-4S direct injection system and its own immobilizer architecture, which means Techstream is required for key programming even though the BRZ uses Subaru's system.
