2017 Toyota 86 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy near Santa Barbara City College in Santa Barbara called me about his 2017 Toyota 86. He had one working key and wanted a spare before he lost his only one. Smart move.
He had already called the dealer. They told him to bring the car in and leave it for the day. He works, so that was a non-starter.
I parked at his building and used my TOY43 Lishi to decode the door lock. The TOY43 reads the wafer positions inside the cylinder so I can cut an exact blade without needing the original as a template. His key was the HYQ12BEL, four buttons, part number SU003-05282, running Toyota's H-chip immobilizer. I cut the emergency blade on my Triton, then connected through OBD to register the new transponder. The 86 uses the same 88 series immobilizer box (89784-12020 board) as the Scion FR-S, so the procedure is identical to what I run on those.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. He clicked the new remote, heard the chirp, turned the key, and the flat-four fired right up. He stood there for a second like he was waiting for a catch.
No catch. Same key, same chip, same security handshake as the dealer would have done. Just a fraction of what they wanted, and he never left his parking spot.
