2017 Toyota 86 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy on the Eastside in Santa Barbara called me on a weekday afternoon. He had one key for his 2017 Toyota 86 and wanted a spare made before something went wrong. The dealer had already quoted him a number that made him stop and look up alternatives.
He was parked at his apartment building. I pulled up in the van, he handed me the original, and I took a look at the key blade before anything else. The 86 uses a specific blade profile, and I wanted to verify what I was duplicating before cutting. I decoded the existing blade and cut a new one on site.
The fob programming runs through the OBD port with diagnostic equipment. The 86's immobilizer has to recognize the transponder in the new key before the car will start. That part of the job has a short timed sequence built in, so you let it run. Whole thing took about 35 to 40 minutes from the time I parked.
He tested it himself: turned the ignition, locked and unlocked from a distance, checked all four buttons. Everything worked. He walked back inside with two working keys.
The dealer quote came up again at the end, almost as an aside. He said he figured that was just what Toyota keys cost. It is not.
