2017 Toyota 86
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how does it work on the 2017 Toyota 86?

A remote head key is a physical key blade with the fob electronics built directly into the head of the key. On the 86, you turn it in the ignition cylinder to start the car. There is no push-button start, no proximity entry. The key does two separate jobs: the blade and transponder handle starting the engine, and the fob buttons handle remote lock and unlock. The fob runs on a CR2016 battery.

Q: How long does the dealer process take for a Toyota 86 key replacement?

Longer than most people expect. The 86 is a lower-volume vehicle at Toyota dealerships, and some service departments have reported needing to order the key blank rather than pulling one from shelf stock. That alone can push the job to the next day or later. Add in scheduling the appointment, drop-off, and time in the service queue, and a key that should be a one-hour job can stretch to two days. Forum threads from 86 owners describe exactly that experience.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2017 Toyota 86. Can I program it myself?

No. The 86 does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for the transponder. Some older Toyota models let you cycle the ignition a certain number of times to add a key, but that method does not apply here. Programming requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a fob online, you still need a locksmith or dealer to pair it to the vehicle.

Q: My 2017 Toyota 86 key blade looks worn down. Does that affect starting the car or just the locks?

Both. A worn blade that does not fully engage the ignition cylinder can cause intermittent no-start situations that look like an electrical or transponder problem. Owners on 86-specific forums have chased what seemed like immobilizer faults, only to find the root cause was a blade worn past the point of reliably turning the cylinder. If your key feels loose in the ignition or takes extra jiggling, get a new blade cut before the original gets any worse.

2017 Toyota 86 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy on the Eastside in Santa Barbara called me on a weekday afternoon. He had one key for his 2017 Toyota 86 and wanted a spare made before something went wrong. The dealer had already quoted him a number that made him stop and look up alternatives.

He was parked at his apartment building. I pulled up in the van, he handed me the original, and I took a look at the key blade before anything else. The 86 uses a specific blade profile, and I wanted to verify what I was duplicating before cutting. I decoded the existing blade and cut a new one on site.

The fob programming runs through the OBD port with diagnostic equipment. The 86's immobilizer has to recognize the transponder in the new key before the car will start. That part of the job has a short timed sequence built in, so you let it run. Whole thing took about 35 to 40 minutes from the time I parked.

He tested it himself: turned the ignition, locked and unlocked from a distance, checked all four buttons. Everything worked. He walked back inside with two working keys.

The dealer quote came up again at the end, almost as an aside. He said he figured that was just what Toyota keys cost. It is not.

Toyota 86 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Toyota dealer to get a replacement key for my 2017 86?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith can cut and program a remote head key for your 2017 Toyota 86 on location. Dealer appointments mean scheduling, possible towing if you are down to zero keys, and sometimes a wait of a day or more for parts to come in. The 86 is not a high-volume model at most Toyota service departments, and some owners have reported service advisors needing extra time to source the correct key.
