Out on the Westside, a guy called me about his 2019 Toyota 86. He said the car was turning over but immediately dying, and he figured it was some kind of engine problem. Had already called a shop. The shop told him to have it towed in.
I asked him one question before he booked the tow: did the key feel loose in the ignition, or had he been using a copy lately? Long pause. He said he'd been using a copy from a hardware store for about three weeks because his original snapped at the base.
That copy was the whole problem. A hardware store key blank cut to the right profile will turn the cylinder, but it has no transponder chip in the head. The immobilizer checks for the chip signal at startup. No chip, no signal, engine shuts off. Starts, stalls, starts, stalls. Classic pattern.
I came out to where he was parked near the Westside, decoded the lock from the ignition cylinder, cut a proper replacement key to his vehicle, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. Car ran clean on the first turn.
He cancelled the tow. The shop bill never happened. He saved a good chunk just by not guessing at it any longer and getting the right key made on site.
