How 4Runner Keys Have Changed Over 30 Years
3rd Gen (N120/N130)
A standard metal key with a Texas 4C (ID33) transponder chip inside the plastic head. Toyota introduced the immobilizer partway through this generation around 1998, so earlier models are purely mechanical. If yours has the chip, it communicates directly with the immobilizer when you turn the ignition, and programming is handled on-board without needing a scan tool.
4th Gen (N210)
A remote head key with a Toyota 4D-67 (DST40), a high-security blade, and three buttons built right into the key head. The battery is a CR1632, and the FCC ID is HYQ12BBX. Programming requires OBD-II access through the diagnostic port under your dash, which means professional tools like Techstream or an Autel IM608. No more simple on-board procedures for this generation.
5th Gen (N280)
A flip key or smart key with a Toyota H chip (DST AES), a laser-cut blade, and four buttons. Starting in 2014, the Limited and TRD Pro trims got push-button start with a full proximity smart key. Programming requires Toyota server authentication, which means your locksmith needs a TIS subscription and the right tools to connect to Toyota's servers in real time. This is the most secure generation by far.
Which Key Does Your 4Runner Use?
A simple metal key with a transponder chip embedded in the head. No buttons, no battery. You turn it in the ignition and the chip does the rest.
Your lock, unlock, and panic buttons are built into the key head. The blade is a high-security cut that is harder to duplicate at a hardware store.
Depending on your trim, you either have a flip key with a blade that folds into the fob, or a smart proximity key for push-button start. Both use a laser-cut blade and a CR2032 battery.

Us vs. the Dealer
When all your keys are gone, the dealer wants a tow and a week of your time. We show up with server access and handle it in your driveway.
Common 4Runner Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
Your 4Runner cranks but will not start, immobilizer light flashing. On 1998-2009 models, the transponder chip degrades from heat in a hot Oxnard lot. We test the chip on-site and cut a new key if dead.
Smart Key Proxy Alignment Loss
Mismatch between smart key proximity ID and vehicle receivers. After a programming event or dead battery, 2014-2024 4Runner doors and ignition stop recognizing the fob. We realign proxy IDs via Techstream to restore smart entry and push-button start.
Immobilizer ECU Sync Issues
Did your battery die or get disconnected? On 2003-2024 4Runners, that knocks the immobilizer ECU out of sync with registered keys. Fix is a full relearn through the OBD-II port. We carry the tools, usually a quick visit.
Fob Button Wear
On 2003-2009 4Runners, the rubber button pad wears through from heavy use, especially trail duty around Ojai or the Los Padres. The remote board is usually fine. We swap your internals into a new shell, no reprogramming.
Can You Program a 4Runner Key Yourself?
No DIY transponder programming procedure exists for this generation. You need professional tools or a dealer to register a new key to the immobilizer.
If you still have your original master key (black head, not the grey valet key), you can add one new transponder key using a timed insert-and-remove procedure through the ignition. The new key must have the correct 4D-67 chip. If you do not have a master key, or if you need the remote buttons programmed, you will need a locksmith.
No DIY programming for this generation. The smart key and flip key systems require diagnostic tools with Toyota server authentication. This is a professional-only job.

The 5th generation 4Runner rides on the N280 chassis, which has remained nearly unchanged since 2009. That makes it one of the longest-produced unmodified SUV platforms in the industry. Toyota kept refining the tech and trim levels, but the bones underneath stayed the same for over 15 years.
