2021 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more expensive is all-keys-lost compared to adding a spare?

Noticeably more, and it's not just a price difference, it's a different job entirely. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a shorter process. The system already has a registered key to reference, and enrollment is faster. When every key is gone, the job involves a full security system reset through the diagnostic port before any new key can be written in.

Q: Do aftermarket 4Runner fobs actually work, or should I stick with OEM?

It depends on the source, and on a 2021, I'd be careful. The vehicle security system on newer Toyotas is particular about what it will accept during enrollment. A used fob that was already registered to another vehicle may not program at all, even with the right equipment. Some aftermarket blanks work fine once enrolled; others have inconsistent build quality that shows up later as intermittent range issues or buttons that stop registering cleanly.

Q: The door handle touch unlock stopped working on my 2021 4Runner. Is the fob the problem?

Not necessarily. This is one of the more common complaints owners report on this generation, and it's often not the fob at all. First check: does the start button still recognize the key when you're inside the vehicle? If yes, the fob is communicating fine and the issue is localized to the exterior touch sensors on the door handle. These handles have capacitive sensors that can get fouled by dirt, water, or oxidation around the touch zone.

Q: Can I program a spare 4Runner smart key myself at home?

No. The 2021 4Runner smart key requires professional diagnostic equipment to enroll. There's no ignition-turn sequence, no button combination, no onboard self-programming mode for smart keys on this vehicle. Those DIY relearn tricks exist on older Toyota models with basic transponder keys in a conventional ignition cylinder. The smart key system is a separate animal and needs an OBD-based tool to write the new fob into the vehicle's security system.

2021 Toyota 4runner Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Storke Ranch, right on the edge of the office corridor near the creek, a guy called me around 9 on a weeknight. His only key to his 2021 4Runner was gone. He'd checked his desk, his pockets, the parking lot. Nothing. The lot was dark and mostly empty, and he was already looking up tow companies.

He didn't have his registration on him and didn't know his VIN off the top of his head. That's where we started. I told him: driver's side, base of the windshield, look from outside the car. He found it. I also had him pull up his insurance app, which had the rest of what I needed for ownership verification.

By the time I pulled out of my driveway, I already knew the key type, had the right fob blank ready, and had the job mostly planned. I met him in the lot with my van, got set up under the lights, and did the all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port. New fob enrolled, emergency insert blade cut on site, all previous keys wiped from the system. He watched the whole thing.

When the 4Runner recognized the new fob and the start button lit up, he just kind of laughed quietly. The relief was obvious.

He paid a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted, and the dealer was closed anyway. The one thing I keep telling people: text me your VIN before I arrive. It's not bureaucratic, it just cuts twenty minutes off the job. Everything else I can work with on site.

Toyota 4runner Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What's the cheapest way to replace a lost key for my 2021 4Runner?▼

Call a mobile locksmith first. Dealers on these newer Toyotas typically quote a few hundred dollars minimum just for the fob, and that's before separate charges for programming, cutting the emergency blade, and diagnostics. Some owners report walking out having spent significantly more than they expected because those line items add up. With EZ Car Keyz, everything is one job: the fob, the blade cut, and the programming done in your driveway or parking lot.
